Quick Facts
Cromwell for Families — Overview
Cromwell sits at the meeting of the Clutha and Kawarau rivers, now backed by Lake Dunstan. It's Central Otago's fruit-growing hub — in summer the roadside fruit stalls selling cherries, apricots, and peaches are a NZ institution. The Old Cromwell Town (partially submerged when the dam was built) has been recreated as a heritage precinct. Cromwell is an excellent stopover between Queenstown and Wanaka.

Cromwell Family FAQ
When can we buy Central Otago cherries?
Central Otago cherries are available from the roadside stalls around Cromwell, Alexandra, and Roxburgh from mid-December through January. They're considered the best cherries in New Zealand. The roadside stalls are informal and excellent value — look for them on SH8 between Cromwell and Alexandra. Apricots follow in January, and stone fruit continues through February.
