Our Verdict
Fiordland is remote, dramatic, and genuinely unlike anywhere else on Earth. Milford Sound — sheer 1,500m peaks rising from dark water, waterfalls cascading year-round, dolphins surfing the bow wave of your cruise boat — is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The drive in from Te Anau is as spectacular as the destination.
Families with kids 5+ who appreciate epic scenery. Teenagers are consistently blown away.
Families needing lots of activities or beach time. Milford Sound itself has limited things to do beyond the cruise.

Fiordland & Milford Sound Family FAQ
Is Milford Sound better from Queenstown or Te Anau?
Always base in Te Anau. Driving from Queenstown is 4h each way — an exhausting 8h round trip that leaves little time at Milford itself. Te Anau is 2h from Milford and a lovely base.
What's the best Milford Sound cruise?
Real Journeys and Cruise Milford are the main reputable operators. The 2-hour cruise covers the full fiord. The 'nature cruise' with commentary is better for families than the cheaper scenic cruises.
Is the drive to Milford Sound safe with kids?
Yes — SH94 is well-maintained and spectacular. Allow 2h from Te Anau with stops. The Homer Tunnel (1.2km, one lane, traffic lights) is exciting for kids. Check the NZ Transport Agency website for any closures.
Is Milford Sound worth the drive with kids?
Yes — Milford Sound is one of those places that lives up to the hype even with tired kids in the car. The 2-hour drive from Te Anau through the Homer Tunnel is itself spectacular. A 2-hour boat cruise lets you see Mitre Peak, Bowen Falls, and seals. The whole experience (drive in, cruise, drive out) takes a full day from Te Anau. Stay in Te Anau the night before to avoid a very early start. The Milford Road is one of NZ's most scenic drives.
What is the best cruise option for families in Milford Sound?
For families, the 2-hour cruise is the standard choice — long enough to see everything without kids losing interest. Real Journeys and Go Orange both run family-friendly cruises with indoor heated lounges. If seasickness is a concern, choose a larger vessel — the catamaran-style boats are more stable than smaller vessels. Underwater Observatory cruises also visit the unique marine observation chamber — a bonus activity worth adding.
Can I drive to Milford Sound in a campervan?
Yes, but check your campervan rental terms — some companies restrict driving through the Homer Tunnel. The road is sealed all the way and campervans are common. There is a basic DOC campsite at Milford Sound itself (book ahead — it fills fast in summer) and better facilities at Te Anau. Do not attempt the Milford Road in heavy snow or ice without chains. Road conditions are available at the NZTA website.
Hidden Gems — Fiordland & Milford Sound
Stuff the guidebooks miss — local knowledge from NZ families who've done it properly.
- 🔍 Cruise in the rain — Milford Sound is famous for waterfalls. Rain creates hundreds of extra waterfalls cascading down the cliffs. A wet day is genuinely the best time to cruise.
- 🔍 Book the first cruise of the day (earliest departure) — before the tour buses from Queenstown arrive, Milford has a completely different atmosphere
- 🔍 The Chasm on SH94 is often rushed past — the 10-min return walk to the churning gorge is spectacular and completely free
- 🔍 Te Anau town is the best base — stay here rather than driving to Milford and back from Queenstown in one day (brutal 8h round trip)
- 🔍 Mirror Lakes at golden hour (late afternoon) — the reflection only works on calm days and the light is magical in the evening
- 🔍 Fiordland Cinema in Te Anau plays 'Ata Whenua — Shadowland' (30 min film about Fiordland) for $15 — excellent context before your Milford cruise
