April — Two Very Different Experiences
April is split in two: Easter and school holiday weeks (busy, expensive, book ahead) vs the week after school holidays end (quiet, cheaper, often beautiful autumn weather). If you can choose when to go, late April after the school holidays is outstanding. If you are tied to school holidays, focus on the South Island's autumn colours which are genuinely world-class and worth the crowds.
Easter in NZ (2026: April 3-6)
- Good Friday (April 3): most attractions are closed or have limited hours. Plan for free activities — beaches, DOC walks, Botanic Gardens.
- Easter Saturday: most attractions reopen. Busy but manageable.
- Easter Sunday: quieter than Saturday — many families attend church or take a rest day.
- Easter Monday (April 6): public holiday. Most major attractions open. Busy.
- The week following Easter: crowds thin dramatically and prices drop — one of the best-value weeks in the NZ travel calendar.

Why Queenstown and Wanaka are Must-Visit in April
- Autumn colours peak in April: the European trees planted by early settlers turn gold, orange, and red around Arrowtown, Wanaka, and Queenstown — genuinely world-class autumn scenery
- Arrowtown in April is arguably the most beautiful village in NZ — the main street lined with golden poplars is extraordinary
- Lake Wanaka autumn colours: the willows and poplars around the lake turn gold — the iconic Wanaka Tree in autumn is spectacular
- Temperatures are cool but crisp and sunny — hiking is actually more comfortable than sweaty summer days
- Accommodation is 15-25% cheaper than January/February (outside Easter week)
April Booking Tips
- Easter week (April 3-11 approx.): book 2-3 months ahead for South Island destinations — Queenstown and Wanaka especially
- Post-Easter week (April 12-28): short-notice bookings often possible — excellent value
- Arrowtown Autumn Festival (usually late April): check dates and book accommodation early if attending
- Ski season does not start until June — the mountains are stunning but the fields are not yet open
- Great time for Milford Sound: September-April has long daylight hours and less rain than May-August
