Our Verdict
The Bay of Islands is NZ's original holiday destination and still one of the best. Paihia is the main family base — from there you can swim with dolphins, sail to deserted islands, visit the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, and enjoy some of the warmest water in the country.

Bay of Islands Family FAQ
Can you actually swim with dolphins at the Bay of Islands?
Yes, but it depends on the dolphins cooperating. Most operators run swim/watch tours. Guaranteed sightings but not guaranteed in-water encounters. Book with Explore NZ or Fullers.
How far is Bay of Islands from Auckland?
About 3.5 hours by car via SH1. Most families drive up — no direct train. Flights take 40 mins to Kerikeri.
Is Russell worth visiting?
Yes — take the 10-minute ferry from Paihia ($15 return). Russell is NZ's first European settlement, quiet and historic. Great for lunch.
What is the best base for Bay of Islands — Paihia or Russell?
Paihia is the main hub with most accommodation, restaurants, and tour operators — it's the easier choice for families. Russell is quieter, charming, and reached by ferry (5 min, $14 return for adults, kids free). Russell is worth a half-day visit regardless of where you stay — the Duke of Marlborough is NZ's oldest pub and the beach is lovely. Stay in Paihia for convenience, visit Russell for the character.
Is the Hole in the Rock worth doing with young kids?
The Cape Brett cruise including the Hole in the Rock is a full-day trip (4–5 hours) and involves open water — check conditions before booking, as it can be rough. Kids 7+ usually manage well; younger children are hit-or-miss depending on sea conditions and temperament. The shorter Dolphin Discovery cruise (3 hours) is better for under-6s — more sheltered water and reliable dolphin encounters.
What are the best beaches in Bay of Islands for families?
Waitangi Beach (in front of the Treaty Grounds, patrolled in summer), Paihia Beach (calm, sheltered, central), Haruru Falls reserve and beach (less known, beautiful), and across the water, Long Beach in Russell (one of the best family beaches in Northland). For something special, the offshore islands (Urupukapuka Island) have spectacular snorkelling — accessible by water taxi.
Hidden Gems — Bay of Islands

- 🔍 Haruru Falls — a horseshoe waterfall 10 min from Paihia. Free, easy 20-min walk from the car park, completely off most tourist itineraries
- 🔍 Waitangi Mangrove boardwalk — free 1km boardwalk through the mangroves behind the Treaty Grounds. Kids love spotting fish and mud crabs
- 🔍 Russell is 15 min by ferry from Paihia ($8 return) — quieter, historic, better cafes, gorgeous beaches (Long Beach is a 10-min walk from town)
- 🔍 Urupukapuka Island day trips — DOC-run island with ancient Maori pa sites and stunning beaches. Ferry from Paihia $45 adult, $23 child return
- 🔍 Poor Knights Islands glass-bottom boat: you don't need to scuba dive — the glass-bottom tours show the underwater world for all ages from Tutukaka
- 🔍 Paihia Night Market (summer Fridays) — fresh seafood, live music, $5–10 snacks, very family-friendly

The Hole in the Rock cruise was the highlight of our trip — dolphins everywhere. Bring layers, it gets windy out on the water.
Beautiful beaches and very relaxed. A bit of a drive from Auckland with kids so we broke it up at Whangārei.
Paihia is so easy with young kids — safe swimming and plenty of cafes. Waitangi Treaty Grounds was great for our older one.
