Our Verdict
The West Coast is New Zealand's wildest and most dramatic region — and surprisingly good for families. Punakaiki's Pancake Rocks are a genuine wonder (free), Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers are accessible by short walks from the car park, and the rainforest-fringed beaches have a raw beauty you won't find anywhere else. Pack rain gear — the Coast averages 3–5 wet days per week, but weather changes fast.

West Coast Family FAQ
Is the West Coast worth visiting with kids?
Yes — but plan around the weather. The Pancake Rocks, glaciers, and Hokitika Gorge are genuinely spectacular, and most are free. Allow extra days in your itinerary for weather delays. A campervan is ideal as it removes accommodation pressure when you need to move fast.
Can you still walk to the glaciers?
Yes — both Franz Josef and Fox have free walks to viewpoints near the glacier face. The glaciers have retreated significantly but the valley walks are still dramatic and worthwhile. Allow 1.5–2 hours return for each. Heli-hike tours are available but expensive (~$400–$500 per adult).
How rainy is the West Coast really?
It averages 3–5 rain days per week year-round. November to March is the best window. Rain tends to be heavy but short — a morning downpour often clears by lunch. Pack waterproofs and plan indoor options. The upside: when it's fine, the light is extraordinary.
What is Hokitika Gorge like for families?
The gorge is safe and walkable for all ages — 25min return on a well-formed track. The water is an extraordinary luminous turquoise from suspended glacial rock flour. The swingbridge adds excitement for kids. Go before 10am for the best light and fewer crowds.
Is the Pancake Rocks worth the stop with kids?
Absolutely — Punakaiki's Pancake Rocks and Blowholes are one of the most dramatic natural sights in NZ and the walkway is easy (20 min loop, fully paved, pram-accessible). When the swell is right, the blowholes are spectacular — check the blowhole activity schedule at the visitor centre (high swell + incoming tide is optimal). It's a perfect leg-stretch stop on the West Coast drive — allow 45 minutes including the walk.
Can you see the Franz Josef and Fox glaciers with kids?
The glacier terminals are not accessible on foot due to ongoing glacier retreat and rockfall risk — guided heli-hikes are the only way onto the glaciers themselves, starting from around $350/person (no minimum age but operators set their own limits — usually 8+ for heli-hike). However, the valley walks to the glacier viewpoints are free, scenic, and suitable for all ages. Franz Josef village also has the West Coast Wildlife Centre (kiwi and tuatara — excellent for kids, $35 adults).
What is the drive like along the West Coast with kids?
The West Coast main highway (SH6) is one of NZ's most scenic drives — stunning coastal rainforest, mountains, and wild beaches. However, it's a long drive: Greymouth to Franz Josef is 2.5 hours, Franz Josef to Haast Pass is another 2.5 hours. Plan for frequent stops and be aware that the road has limited fuel and food options between towns — fill up in Hokitika, Greymouth, and Franz Josef before remote sections. Cellphone coverage is patchy throughout.
