Our Verdict
Christchurch is the South Island hub and a genuinely underrated family destination. The International Antarctic Centre is world-class, the Gondola has incredible views, and it's one of the most affordable major cities to visit in NZ. Plus it's the base for road trips to Queenstown, Kaikoura and the West Coast.
Families using it as a South Island base, or those wanting an affordable city break
Those wanting beach holidays (beaches are cold, not tropical)

Christchurch Family FAQ
Is Christchurch worth visiting after the earthquakes?
Absolutely. The rebuild has created one of NZ's most interesting city centres — street art, container malls, modern architecture alongside heritage buildings. The 'gap filler' culture is unique.
What is Christchurch best known for?
The Antarctic Centre (genuinely world-class), the Gondola, and as the South Island's main hub. Also known for its garden city parks and punting on the Avon River.
Is the Antarctic Centre worth it for kids?
Yes — the International Antarctic Centre is one of the best paid attractions in NZ for families. The Hagglund all-terrain vehicle ride, the storm experience, the Little Blue penguins, and the interactive exhibits are all excellent. Budget 2.5–3 hours. Book online for a small discount. It's particularly good for rainy days and is right next to the airport, making it a perfect first or last activity.
What is free to do in Christchurch with kids?
Several excellent free options: Botanic Gardens and punting (gondola is paid but the gardens are free), Canterbury Museum, Hagley Park, New Brighton beach and pier, the Avon River Precinct, and the Cardboard Cathedral (free to enter). The city centre is compact and very walkable. The free City Circuit bus connects most of the main attractions.
How far is Christchurch from the ski fields?
Mt Hutt is the closest ski field — about 90 minutes from central Christchurch via Methven. It's a large, well-developed family resort with a good ski school for kids. Porters and Craigieburn are closer (60 minutes) but smaller and more suited to intermediate skiers. On the way to Mt Hutt, stop at Methven for gear hire — it's cheaper than buying equipment in Christchurch.

Margaret Mahy playground is the best free thing we did in NZ. Kids didn't want to leave. Great flat city for scooters too.
Gondola and the wildlife park (Willowbank) were both winners. Plenty of rainy-day options which we needed.
Punting on the Avon was magical and the kids loved the tram. Very family-friendly and easy to get around.
