Why Queenstown Wins for Families
- Skyline Gondola and Luge — genuinely one of the best family activities in NZ. All ages, rain-protected, 2–3 hours.
- Shotover Jet and Heli activities for older kids (8+). Queenstown is the adventure capital for a reason.
- More backup options on rainy days: Queenstown has indoor mini golf, AJ Hackett bungy (spectator), multiple museums.
- Accessibility: everything is within 5 minutes of the town centre. No car needed for most activities.
- Arrowtown: 20 minutes from Queenstown — fantastic for kids (gold panning, river, historic Chinese settlement).
Why Wanaka Wins for Families
- Puzzling World: one of the best value family activities in NZ. 3–4 hours, all ages, indoor and outdoor.
- Lake Wanaka itself: shallow, clear, warm in summer — the best lake swimming in the South Island.
- Roys Peak and Rob Roy Glacier Track: serious hiking for active families with older kids.
- Quieter and more spacious: kids can actually run around without dodging tourists.
- Wanaka Tree (the famous lone willow): free, stunning, great for family photos.
The Real Cost Difference
Accommodation is the main saving in Wanaka. A family apartment in Queenstown during peak season runs $300–550/night. The same standard in Wanaka: $200–380/night. Over 3 nights, that's $300–510 saved on accommodation alone. Eating out is similar: Wanaka has excellent restaurants at 20–30% less than Queenstown's tourist-priced strip.
Our Recommendation: Do Both
The Crown Range road between Queenstown and Wanaka (SH89) is one of the most scenic drives in NZ — an hour with a 15-minute stop at the summit viewpoint. Most 7+ day South Island itineraries should include 2 nights Wanaka and 2–3 nights Queenstown. If you only have 3–4 days total in the region and have young kids under 8, Wanaka is the better base. For teens and adventure-focused families, Queenstown.
Getting Between Them
- Crown Range (SH89): the scenic route. 70km, about 70 minutes. High alpine road — check conditions in winter.
- SH6 via Cromwell: 100km, 75 minutes. Easier driving, passes Lake Dunstan and Cromwell fruit stalls.
- Note: SH89 isn't suitable for large campervans. Take SH6 if in a big rig.
- Wanaka to Queenstown Airport: 75 min. Fly in/out of Queenstown even if basing in Wanaka.
