Our Verdict

New Plymouth is one of New Zealand's most underrated family destinations. The perfectly cone-shaped Mt Taranaki dominates the skyline, Pukekura Park is genuinely one of NZ's best parks for kids, and the coastal walkway runs 13km along dramatic black sand surf beaches. It's less crowded than Queenstown or Rotorua, more affordable, and equally beautiful.

New Plymouth & Taranaki Family FAQ

Is New Plymouth worth visiting with kids?

Absolutely — it's one of NZ's best-value family destinations. Pukekura Park, the coastal walkway, Brooklands Zoo, and Govett-Brewster are all free. Accommodation is 30–40% cheaper than Queenstown or Rotorua.

Can kids climb Mt Taranaki?

The summit is for experienced adults only (technical, crampons needed in winter). Families with kids 6+ can enjoy the Dawson Falls track (1hr return, stunning waterfall), the Pouakai Tarns walk, and the visitor centre area tracks.

What is Pukekura Park like for families?

Exceptional — it's a large landscaped park with a rowing lake (hire boats for $12), a waterfall walk, a cafe, playgrounds, and the adjacent Brooklands Zoo. Plan 2–3 hours. It's completely free.

Is the Len Lye Centre worth visiting with kids?

The Len Lye Centre within the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery houses kinetic sculptures that literally move and make sound — genuinely fascinating for kids of all ages and most adults. Entry is free. Allow 1–1.5 hours. Combine it with the Pukekura Park and Brooklands Zoo which are adjacent and also free — the park has a lake with paddleboats and a fantastic children's playground.

What is the Coastal Walkway in New Plymouth?

The New Plymouth Coastal Walkway is a 13km paved path along the Taranaki coast from Fitzroy to Bell Block — one of the best urban coastal paths in NZ. Families typically do a section rather than the whole thing. The Wind Wand (a Len Lye sculpture) near the Len Lye Centre is a highlight. The walkway is flat, wide, and suitable for bikes, scooters, and prams. The section from New Plymouth CBD to Fitzroy Beach takes about 45 minutes walking.

Is Mt Taranaki accessible with children?

The lower walks around Mt Taranaki (Egmont National Park) are accessible and rewarding for families. The Enchanted Walk (30 min loop), Wilkies Pools Track (1.5 hr return to beautiful rock pools), and Kamahi Loop (1 hr) are all suitable for kids 5+. The summit is a serious mountaineering objective — do not attempt with children. Even partial ascents above the bushline require experience and equipment. Stick to the lower tracks for an excellent family experience.
