Our Verdict
Rotorua is arguably NZ's best pure family destination. It's affordable, centrally located, packed with activities, and the geothermal parks are genuinely unlike anything kids will have experienced. Budget around $250–400/day for a family of four.
All ages — genuinely excellent for 2-year-olds through teenagers
Those sensitive to the sulphur smell (it fades after a day)

Rotorua Family FAQ
Does Rotorua smell bad?
Yes — the sulphur (rotten egg) smell is real, especially near geothermal areas. Most visitors stop noticing after a few hours. Kids often find it funny. It's not harmful.
How many days do you need in Rotorua?
2–3 days covers the highlights. 4 days if you want to do day trips to Wai-O-Tapu and the Hobbiton Movie Set (45 mins away).
Is Hobbiton worth it with kids?
Older kids (8+) who know Lord of the Rings love it. Under-8s may not get much from it. At $49/adult it's a significant cost — prioritise other activities for younger kids.
Is Rotorua smelly? Will kids complain?
Yes — Rotorua has a mild sulphur smell from the geothermal activity, especially in the CBD. Most kids find it funny rather than unpleasant, and you stop noticing it within a few hours. The smell is strongest near geothermal sites like Wai-O-Tapu and Hell's Gate. Hotels in the CBD can have it; those further out (e.g., near the lakes) are mostly smell-free.
What age is best for the Māori cultural experiences in Rotorua?
Ages 5 and up enjoy most cultural experiences — the kapa haka (song and dance), hangi (earth oven meal), and Māori village tours at Te Puia and Tamaki are engaging for school-age kids. Under 5s can manage but may lose focus during longer performances. Te Puia also has the famous geysers and kiwi house which younger children enjoy.
Can you visit Rotorua in one day from Auckland?
Yes — Rotorua is about 2.5 hours from Auckland. A day trip gives you enough time for Wai-O-Tapu or Te Puia, the Agrodome, and lunch. However, you'll be rushing. An overnight stay lets you do a Māori cultural evening (dinner + performance), adds Rainbow Springs and the luge, and is far less stressful. See our Rotorua day trip itinerary for a tight but doable day plan.
