Our Verdict

Wellington punches well above its weight as a family destination. Te Papa is the best free museum in NZ, the cable car is a Wellington institution, and the waterfront is brilliant for kids. It's also NZ's windiest city — plan for indoor backup options.

Wellington Family FAQ

Is Wellington worth visiting with kids?

Absolutely. Te Papa alone justifies the trip — it's free, world-class, and kids can spend 3–4 hours there. Add the cable car, Zealandia, and the waterfront and you have a brilliant 2–3 day family break.

How windy is Wellington really?

Very. It earns its reputation. Always pack a windproof jacket. The wind doesn't stop you doing anything but it makes outdoor activities less pleasant in winter. Summer winds are actually refreshing in the heat.

Can you do Wellington as a stopover between North and South Island?

Yes — this is a common itinerary. Fly or drive to Wellington, spend 2 nights, then take the Interislander ferry to Picton for the South Island leg.

Is Te Papa free for kids?

Yes — Te Papa Tongarewa (the national museum) is completely free for all visitors including children. It's world-class and easily fills 3–4 hours. The natural history exhibits, the Māori collection, and the earthquake simulator are all kid-friendly highlights. It's open daily and is one of the best free family activities in New Zealand, full stop.

Is Wellington worth visiting with a young family?

Yes — Wellington has excellent family infrastructure. Te Papa is free and world-class. The cable car and Botanic Gardens are easy and scenic. Zealandia wildlife sanctuary is exceptional for native birds. The waterfront is flat, walkable, and has cafés and playgrounds. The only downside is Wellington's notorious wind — pack layers year-round. The compact city centre means you can cover a lot without much driving.

How many days do we need in Wellington with kids?

Two full days is a comfortable minimum: Day 1 — Te Papa, waterfront, cable car, Botanic Gardens. Day 2 — Zealandia, Mt Victoria lookout (for older kids), Cuba Street for lunch, Weta Workshop tour (for movie fans 10+). A third day allows for day trips — the Wairarapa wine region is 1 hour away, or Kapiti Island (world-class bird sanctuary) if booked ahead.
