• Bay of Islands — post-school-holiday sweet spot. Dolphin cruises and water activities without January intensity.
• Wanaka — lake is at its warmest, Roy's Peak less crowded than January, Puzzling World walk-up available.
• Northland (Cape Reinga, Ninety Mile Beach) — February has the best weather and the crowds are gone. The Cape Reinga day trip is spectacular.
