- Ocean water is at its warmest in February — Northland and Bay of Plenty reach 22-24C

Best February Destinations
- Nelson / Abel Tasman — February is peak condition for the Abel Tasman track and water activities. Book the Coastal Track 4-6 months ahead even in February.
- Coromandel — quieter than January, sea at 23C, Hot Water Beach finally manageable. Still arrive early but 9am now works instead of 7am.
- Bay of Islands — post-school-holiday sweet spot. Dolphin cruises and water activities without January intensity.
- Wanaka — lake is at its warmest, Roy's Peak less crowded than January, Puzzling World walk-up available.
- Northland (Cape Reinga, Ninety Mile Beach) — February has the best weather and the crowds are gone. The Cape Reinga day trip is spectacular.
February Activities to Prioritise
- Swimming at any NZ beach — February is when the ocean is warmest nationwide
- Abel Tasman Coast Track day walks or overnight huts — book even in February, huts fill
- Tongariro Alpine Crossing — excellent conditions in February, less crowded than January. Start early (6am) to beat the day-trippers.
- Wine region visits (Marlborough, Hawke's Bay) — harvest begins in February, wineries often open for tastings
- Any water activity (kayaking, paddle boarding, jet skiing) — warm water maximises the experience
Booking Advice for February
- First two weeks of February: still book ahead (school holidays in some states of Australia mean AU families are visiting)
- After February 10: short-notice bookings often possible for campervans and holiday parks
- Abel Tasman huts: still need advance booking even in February — the track is popular year-round
- Queenstown activities: walk-up availability returns in mid-February at most operators
- Cost saving tip: compare February vs January prices on the same accommodation — often 20-30% cheaper for identical quality
