Getting There
A car is essential for the Coromandel. Petrol is expensive on the peninsula — fill up in Thames before heading north.

Cathedral Cove + Hahei
- Cathedral Cove morning (walk 35 min each way or take the boat from Hahei)
- Hahei Beach afternoon swim
- Explore Hahei village
- Fish and chips dinner
- Cathedral Cove walk opens at 9am — go as early as possible to beat the crowds
- The boat from Hahei Wharf ($45 adult/$23 child return) saves the walk if you have young kids
Hot Water Beach Day
- Hot Water Beach at low tide (check hotwatertide.co.nz the night before)
- Hire spades ($5) and dig your hot pool
- Afternoon: return to Hahei or explore Whitianga by ferry ($5 each way)

- Water's Edge restaurant in Whitianga is excellent for a nicer dinner
Drive Back to Auckland
- Morning swim at Hahei if the weather is good
- Stop at Miranda Shorebird Centre on the way back (thousands of godwits from Alaska, free entry)
- Or: stop at Thames for lunch and Butterfly and Orchid Garden ($15/adult, $8/child)
- Back in Auckland by mid-afternoon
- Miranda is perfect for birdwatching — tens of thousands of migratory birds from August to March
- The Thames to Auckland stretch can be slow on Sunday afternoons in summer — leave Hahei by 2pm

FAQ
Can you do Hot Water Beach and Cathedral Cove in one day?
Yes — they're only 10 minutes apart. Do Cathedral Cove in the morning, then Hot Water Beach around low tide in the afternoon. Check tide times the day before.
Is the Coromandel drive scary?
Parts of SH25A over the Kopu-Hikuai saddle are steep and winding — take it slowly with a campervan. The main SH25 coastal route is easy. From Thames north to Coromandel Town via SH25 is a beautiful coastal road.
