A car is essential for the Coromandel. Petrol is expensive on the peninsula — fill up in Thames before heading north.

FAQ
Can you do Hot Water Beach and Cathedral Cove in one day?
Yes — they're only 10 minutes apart. Do Cathedral Cove in the morning, then Hot Water Beach around low tide in the afternoon. Check tide times the day before.
Is the Coromandel drive scary?
Parts of SH25A over the Kopu-Hikuai saddle are steep and winding — take it slowly with a campervan. The main SH25 coastal route is easy. From Thames north to Coromandel Town via SH25 is a beautiful coastal road.
