Our Verdict

Wanaka is what Queenstown was before the crowds arrived. The lake is stunning, the town is relaxed, Puzzling World is a quirky family classic, and Treble Cone offers winter skiing for those with older kids. In summer, it's a beach town with mountains.

Best for

Families who want scenery without Queenstown prices and crowds

Not ideal for

Those who want maximum activity options (fewer than Queenstown)

Wanaka Family FAQ

Is Wanaka better than Queenstown for families?

For young children (under 8) or families wanting a relaxed pace, yes. Wanaka is calmer, cheaper, and the lake is more accessible. For older kids wanting adventure activities, Queenstown has more options.

Is the Crown Range road safe to drive?

Yes, in good weather. It's NZ's highest paved road and spectacular. Avoid in icy conditions (winter/early spring). The alternative via Cromwell is longer but easier.

Is Wanaka better than Queenstown for families?

For younger families (under 10), many parents prefer Wanaka — it's quieter, less commercial, and the lake and town centre are more relaxed. Cardrona ski resort is world-class for families in winter. Puzzling World is a genuine Wanaka institution. The lake is spectacular for swimming and kayaking in summer. Queenstown has more activities and more restaurant variety, but Wanaka has more soul and is less rushed.

How far is Wanaka from Queenstown?

About 1 hour via the direct Crown Range Road (the highest sealed road in NZ — spectacular views but steep and winding, not suitable for campervans or in icy conditions). Via the main highway through Cromwell it's about 75 minutes. The Crown Range is worth doing in good conditions — the views from the top are extraordinary. Check conditions in winter before attempting it.

What is the best time to visit Wanaka with kids?

Summer (Dec–Feb) for lake swimming, hiking, and outdoor activities — the town is busy but manageable. Autumn (March–May) for stunning golden colours around the lake, fewer crowds, and great hiking conditions. Winter (June–Sept) for Cardrona skiing — Wanaka is much quieter than Queenstown for ski families. Spring (Oct–Nov) is underrated — warming up, lake accessible, uncrowded. Avoid peak January if you hate queues.
