Our Verdict

The Coromandel Peninsula is Auckland's backyard holiday spot — and for good reason. Hot Water Beach (dig your own hot pool in the sand), Cathedral Cove sea arch, Thames goldfields, and a string of gorgeous beaches make it one of the best NZ family destinations. Best in summer.

Best for

Beach holidays, Auckland day trips or overnights, hot spring lovers

Not ideal for

Families wanting theme parks or rainy-day activities — it's very outdoor-focused

Coromandel Family FAQ

When is Hot Water Beach best?

The geothermal seep is only accessible 2 hours either side of low tide. Check hotwatertide.co.nz before you go. Weekday mornings in shoulder season are the least crowded.

Is Cathedral Cove better by boat or on foot?

Boat if you have young kids (avoids the 35-min walk each way). On foot if your kids can manage it — the walk is lovely. The sea arch looks the same either way.

Can you do Coromandel as a day trip from Auckland?

Yes — just about. Hot Water Beach + Cathedral Cove is a very long day (5h driving total). Better to stay 1–2 nights and actually enjoy it.
