Our Verdict
The Coromandel Peninsula is Auckland's backyard holiday spot — and for good reason. Hot Water Beach (dig your own hot pool in the sand), Cathedral Cove sea arch, Thames goldfields, and a string of gorgeous beaches make it one of the best NZ family destinations. Best in summer.

Coromandel Family FAQ
When is Hot Water Beach best?
The geothermal seep is only accessible 2 hours either side of low tide. Check hotwatertide.co.nz before you go. Weekday mornings in shoulder season are the least crowded.
Is Cathedral Cove better by boat or on foot?
Boat if you have young kids (avoids the 35-min walk each way). On foot if your kids can manage it — the walk is lovely. The sea arch looks the same either way.
Can you do Coromandel as a day trip from Auckland?
Yes — just about. Hot Water Beach + Cathedral Cove is a very long day (5h driving total). Better to stay 1–2 nights and actually enjoy it.
Hidden Gems — Coromandel
Stuff the guidebooks miss — local knowledge from NZ families who've done it properly.
- 🔍 Hot Water Beach at dawn — arrive 90 mins before low tide on a weekday morning. You'll have it almost to yourself vs the chaotic peak-time crowds
- 🔍 Opito Bay — one of the most stunning beaches on the peninsula, hard to find, rarely crowded. Locals go here instead of Hahei
- 🔍 Te Whanganui-A-Hei Marine Reserve snorkelling near Cathedral Cove — some of the best snorkelling in NZ, completely free
- 🔍 Coromandel town (the actual town) — often skipped as people go straight to Hahei. The Coromandel Smoking Company smoked fish and chips are legendary ($15 a serve)
- 🔍 Karangahake Gorge windows walk (Thames side) — goes through old gold mine tunnels with a torch. Free, very cool for kids
- 🔍 Long Bay near Whitianga — far less visited than Hahei, beautiful swimming, rarely mentioned in guides
