Quick Facts
Matamata for Families — Overview
Matamata is a small farming town that became world-famous as the filming location for Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies. The Hobbiton Movie Set is on an actual working farm and is the only permanent film set from the trilogy. Beyond Hobbiton, the town has a good information centre, pleasant cafés, and is a natural stopover on the Hamilton–Rotorua route.

Matamata Family FAQ
Do you need to book Hobbiton in advance?
Yes, strongly recommended — especially in school holidays, Hobbiton can sell out weeks in advance. Book at hobbitontours.com. Tours run throughout the day (departures every 20 minutes in peak season) and take about 2 hours.
What age is Hobbiton suitable for?
All ages, but the most meaningful experience is for kids who've seen the films — typically 7 and older. Younger children still enjoy the scale of the hobbit holes, the farm animals, and the enormous party tree. Under 9s are free.
