Oamaru for Families — Overview

Oamaru is a remarkable small city on the Otago coast, famous for two things: its extraordinary Victorian Precinct of limestone buildings (home to steampunk workshops, galleries, and the famous Sunday market) and its blue penguin colony — the world's smallest penguins returning to shore at dusk every evening. The penguin viewing is one of the most accessible and magical wildlife experiences in NZ.

Oamaru Family FAQ

What time do the blue penguins come ashore in Oamaru?

Blue penguins (kororā) return to their colony at dusk every evening — timing varies with the season. In summer (December–February) they arrive around 9–9:30pm. In winter (June–August) it's 5:30–6pm. The Blue Penguin Colony has a grandstand and lighting that lets you see without disturbing them. Book tickets online — it does sell out in peak season.

Can we see yellow-eyed penguins (hoiho) at Oamaru too?

Yes — Bushy Beach (a 10-minute drive from Oamaru) has a free public viewing hide where you can observe yellow-eyed penguins in the wild at dusk. Numbers vary — you might see 2 or 20. They're much rarer than blue penguins (one of the world's rarest penguins) so any sighting is special. Bring binoculars and arrive 30–45 minutes before dusk.
