Raglan for Families — Overview
Raglan is a small, bohemian surf town on the Waikato west coast, 45 minutes from Hamilton. The town has a relaxed creative vibe, excellent surf beaches (Ngarunui is the main family beach — lifeguarded in summer), a beautiful tidal harbour for kayaking, and some of NZ's best fish tacos. It's one of those places where a planned day trip turns into a 2-night stay.

Is Raglan beach suitable for young children?
Ngarunui Beach is supervised by surf lifeguards in summer and has a relatively gentle break suitable for bodyboarding and swimming in calm conditions. The tidal harbour at the town is much calmer and excellent for younger kids and kayaking. Avoid the main surf breaks (Manu Bay, Whale Bay) with young children — they're for experienced surfers.
Can we do Raglan as a day trip from Auckland?
Yes — it's about 2 hours from Auckland and very doable as a day trip. Leave Auckland by 9am, arrive mid-morning for a surf lesson or beach time, have lunch at the harbour, walk Bridal Veil Falls on the way back. It's a great contrast to the city.
