Te Anau for Families — Overview

Te Anau is the main town in Fiordland National Park and the essential base for visiting Milford Sound. The town sits on the shores of Lake Te Anau — the largest lake in the South Island. Beyond Milford, Te Anau itself has excellent family attractions including the Te Ana-au Caves (glow worms), the Wildlife Centre (free, with kākāpō viewing), and excellent lakeside dining.

Te Anau Family FAQ

Is it better to base in Te Anau or Queenstown for Milford Sound?

Te Anau is much better as a Milford base. The drive from Te Anau to Milford is 2 hours (spectacular). From Queenstown it's 4.5 hours — a very long day trip. Stay in Te Anau for at least 2 nights: one day for the glow worm caves and Wildlife Centre, one day for Milford Sound.

Are the Te Ana-au Caves suitable for young children?

Yes — the glow worm cave tour is excellent for children as young as 4. The cave is accessible (no tight squeezes), the boat section on an underground lake is magical, and the glow worms are genuinely spectacular. The tour takes about 1.5 hours and involves some walking. Bring a warm layer — caves are 12°C year-round.
