Westport for Families — Overview
Westport is a small West Coast town at the mouth of the Buller River. The main family attraction is Cape Foulwind — a short scenic drive and easy coastal walk to a fur seal colony. It's a genuinely spectacular and free wildlife experience. The Coaltown Museum covers the region's coal mining history well. Westport is the northern entry point to the West Coast on the Buller Gorge highway.

Westport Family FAQ
When do the seals breed at Cape Foulwind?
Fur seals are at Cape Foulwind year-round, but pups are born in late November through December and are visible on the rocks through the summer. The breeding season makes November–February the most spectacular time for families — pups are visible from the walkway. The adult seals are present and fascinating all year.
