Whangarei Family FAQ
Are Whangarei Falls worth stopping for?
Yes — Whangarei Falls is one of the most accessible beautiful waterfalls in NZ. The car park is right off the main road, the walk to the viewing platform is 5 minutes, and the falls are genuinely spectacular (26m high, wide curtain of water). There's also a good loop walk through the native bush. It's free and takes about 30–45 minutes total. Worth every minute.
What is the Tutukaka Coast?
The Tutukaka Coast is 30 minutes east of Whangarei and includes the fishing village of Tutukaka, Matapouri Beach (with its famous 'Mermaid Pools' — tidal rock pools), and access to the Poor Knights Islands (rated one of the world's top dive sites). Sandy Bay and Whangaumu Bay are excellent family beaches. It's one of NZ's most beautiful and least-crowded coastal areas.
