Whitianga for Families — Overview
Whitianga is the main town in Mercury Bay on the Coromandel Peninsula, 2.5 hours from Auckland. It serves as the best base for Cathedral Cove (water taxi from Whitianga or Hahei) and is 30 minutes from Hot Water Beach. The town has a pleasant waterfront, ferry across to Flaxmill Bay, and excellent seafood restaurants. A perfect 2–3 night Coromandel base.

Whitianga Family FAQ
Should we base in Whitianga or Hahei for the Coromandel?
Whitianga has more services (supermarkets, restaurants, accommodation variety) and is a better base for a 2–3 night stay. Hahei is a tiny, beautiful beach village that's closer to Cathedral Cove — great for 1–2 nights if you want to walk to the cove rather than take a water taxi. For families, Whitianga is the more practical choice.
