- Continue to Bark Bay or Anchorage Beach — turquoise water, golden sand, total paradise
- Guided kayak tour from Marahau (half-day — 4h, suitable for kids 7+, Abel Tasman Kayaks)
- Snorkel at Adele Island (rock hopper water taxi tour) — seals, fish, crystal-clear water
- Return water taxi to Marahau by 4pm
- Water taxis run all day in summer — you can hop on and off at different beaches
- Abel Tasman Kayaks is the most family-friendly operator — they specialise in families with kids
- Book the 9am water taxi for maximum beach time
Remote Totaranui Beach + Pupu Springs
- Drive to Totaranui Beach — DOC campsite at the end of the road, enormous golden beach, totally remote
- Snorkel, swim, and explore for 2h — the most pristine beach in Abel Tasman
- Drive to Takaka (Golden Bay) for lunch — Wholemeal Cafe or The Naked Possum are great
- Te Waihou Puna (Pupu Springs) — world’s largest clear freshwater spring (free, 45-min boardwalk walk)
- Golden Bay lookout at Takaka Hill
- Totaranui road is unsealed for 15km — passable in any car but take it slowly

Farewell Spit Ecotour + Departure
- Farewell Spit Ecotour (book ahead — 4h, NZ’s longest sandspit, gannet colony, $95 adult / $55 child)
- Cape Farewell — most northerly point of the South Island (short walk, dramatic views)
- Wharariki Beach — 20-min walk to wild deserted beach with sea arches (free, the most dramatic beach in Golden Bay)
- Drive back to Nelson for evening flight or stay
- Wharariki Beach is one of NZ’s most dramatic beaches — wind-sculpted arches, no crowds, seals often visible
- Farewell Spit ecotour is the only way to access the full spit — book weeks ahead in summer
- If time is short, skip Farewell Spit and spend an extra half-day kayaking in Abel Tasman
Plan Your Trip
Before you head off, these guides will help you get the most out of your 4-day itinerary:
Packing Tips for This Trip
- Dry bag for the water taxi and kayak — phones and cameras get wet
- Reef-safe sunscreen — Abel Tasman has strict conservation rules, reef-safe is better for the water
- Snorkel and mask — the water clarity around Adele Island and Bark Bay is world-class
- Beach shoes (jandals or water shoes) — some golden sand beaches have rocky entries
- Lightweight backpack for beach day walks — water, snacks, towels, and sunscreen
FAQ
What age do kids need to be for kayaking in Abel Tasman?
Most operators accept children from 7 years old for guided half-day kayaks. Younger children (5+) can do water taxi tours and beach visits without kayaking. Sea kayaks in Abel Tasman are in protected calm waters — it’s one of the safest places in NZ to kayak with kids.
Do we need to book water taxis in advance?
Yes — in January and February especially. Abel Tasman Aqua Taxi and Wilsons Abel Tasman are the main operators. Book at least 2 weeks ahead in peak summer. Shoulder season (November, March) has more availability.
Can we camp in Abel Tasman National Park?
Yes — Totaranui, Bark Bay, and Anchorage have DOC campsites but they fill a year in advance for Christmas/January. Book through the DOC website as soon as bookings open. Non-campers should base themselves in Nelson or Marahau and day-trip in.
