Rental Car or Campervan
A campervan works well for Northland — holiday parks are excellent and well-spaced. Rental car is more economical if you don't need the extra beds.

Dolphin cruises book out in peak season — reserve as soon as you confirm dates.

Budget is indicative. Campervan hire can reduce accommodation and food costs significantly — compare campervans.
Day-by-Day Plan
Auckland — Aquarium, Zoo & Waterfront
- Kelly Tarlton's SEA LIFE Aquarium — penguins and shark tunnel (book online: $36/adult, $24/child)
- Mission Bay beach and foreshore playground
- Auckland waterfront walk — Viaduct Harbour, cloud forest art
- Or: Auckland Zoo instead of aquarium ($29/adult, $15/child)
- Pick up rental car at airport — Christchurch has great car hire competition, book early
- Don't try to do both Zoo and Aquarium on day 1 — choose one
- Mission Bay playground is excellent for jet-lagged kids needing to run
Auckland — Sky Tower & Waiheke
- Sky Tower observation deck — 360 views, glass floor panels ($35/adult, $17/child)
- Ferry to Waiheke Island — 45min crossing, bikes or buses to beaches ($38 return/person)
- Palm Beach or Onetangi Beach on Waiheke — excellent safe swimming beaches
- Stonyridge or Mudbrick Vineyard for a family lunch (both kid-friendly grounds)
- The Waiheke ferry is itself a highlight for kids — good sea views leaving the city
- Waiheke buses connect to all main beaches from the ferry terminal
- Buy Auckland Sky Tower + Ferry as a combo if you want both in one day
Drive North to Bay of Islands
- Whangarei stop: Whangarei Falls (15min walk, free, beautiful waterfall)
- Whangarei Town Basin for coffee and a stretch
- Arrive Paihia — foreshore walk, beach, book dolphin cruise
- Waitangi Treaty Grounds late afternoon if time allows
- Whangarei Falls is the best motorway break in Northland — pool and picnic area
- Book dolphin cruise for tomorrow morning from Paihia wharf before you leave
- Paihia is walkable — park at the holiday park and walk to everything
Bay of Islands — Dolphins & Cape Reinga
- Dolphin Discoveries cruise — swim with dolphins from Paihia wharf ($89/adult, $55/child)
- Option: Cape Reinga day tour by bus from Paihia ($75-90/adult, includes 90 Mile Beach)
- Or: Self-drive to Kerikeri — Rainbow Falls, Stone Store, Kerikeri foreshore
- The dolphin swim is the Bay of Islands highlight — book it
- Cape Reinga by bus is better value than driving yourself (includes beach driving)
- If doing Cape Reinga by bus, that fills the full day — skip Kerikeri to Day 5
Waipoua Kauri Forest & Return to Auckland
- Waipoua Forest: Tane Mahuta — world's largest living kauri tree (15min walk, free, unmissable)
- Te Matua Ngahere walk if time allows (40min return)
- Dargaville stop — Dargaville Museum for Northland history
- Drive south to Auckland via SH12 and SH1 (2.5h from Dargaville)
- Leave Paihia early (7am) to reach Waipoua by 9:30am and Auckland by 2pm
- Must stay on boardwalks at all kauri trees — kauri dieback disease is serious
- Tane Mahuta is genuinely awe-inspiring — adults often more moved than kids
Packing Tips for This Trip
- Swimwear and reef-safe sunscreen every day
- Sandfly repellent for Waipoua Forest and beach evenings
- Old shoes for beach and bush walks
- Boogie board if visiting in summer — Northland beaches are excellent
- Download offline NZ maps — patchy coverage north of Kaitaia
FAQ
Is this trip doable with a toddler or baby?
Yes with some adjustments. The dolphin cruise is fine for babies in arms (some operators have age limits — check). Whangarei Falls, Mission Bay, and Tane Mahuta are all pushchair-friendly. Skip Cape Reinga (very long day) and swap for a relaxing Paihia beach day.
What is the best time of year to visit Northland?
November to April — warm enough for swimming, long daylight hours. January and February are peak (crowded and expensive). November and December are the sweet spot — summer conditions without the school holiday crowds.
Is the Waiheke Island detour worth it on a 5-day trip?
Yes if you're visiting in summer (Oct-Apr) and enjoy beaches or food. It adds a half-day and $35-40 per person in ferry costs, but the crossing and the relaxed island atmosphere are genuinely different from the city.
