Wanaka Family Day + Depart
- Mt Iron short hike (1.5h return, free — 360° views of Wanaka and the Alps)
- Rippon Winery picnic — beautiful vineyard on Lake Wanaka, kids welcome, bring your own food
- Lake Hawea short detour (15 mins) — uncrowded turquoise lake, great swim spot
- Drive to Queenstown Airport — return car, fly out
- Queenstown Airport is 1h from Wanaka — allow buffer time in peak season (traffic on Crown Range)
- The Crown Range Road (via Cardrona) is more scenic but slower — great if time allows
Plan Your Trip
Before you head off, these guides will help you get the most out of your 6-day itinerary:
Packing Tips for This Trip
- Sandfly repellent with DEET — Fiordland sandflies are legendary and will ruin your day without it
- Waterproof jacket and quick-dry layers — Fiordland gets heavy rainfall, even in summer
- Binoculars — for dolphins, fur seals, and Fiordland crested penguins on the cruise
- Motion sickness tablets — the Milford Sound boat is smooth but some children get queasy
- Fuel up completely in Te Anau — no fuel available at Milford Sound
FAQ
Can toddlers do Milford Sound?
Absolutely — the cruise is easy for all ages and toddlers are usually free or heavily discounted. The boat is large and stable. The Milford Road drive itself is a highlight the whole family will enjoy. Avoid the kayak with children under 5.
Do we need a 4WD to drive to Milford Sound?
No — SH94 to Milford Sound is fully sealed and suitable for any car. However, the Homer Tunnel section requires patience (single-lane priority sections). Check the NZTA road conditions app in winter as the road occasionally closes after heavy snowfall.
Is Milford or Doubtful Sound better for families?
Both are exceptional. Milford Sound is easier to access and has more dramatic close-up waterfalls. Doubtful Sound is bigger, quieter, and has a greater sense of wilderness — the bus over Wilmot Pass adds a fun element for kids. If budget allows, do both.
