Day-by-Day Plan

Day 1

Drive to Te Anau — Fiordland Gateway

📍 Queenstown → Te Anau 🚗 2h (170km via Kingston and Lumsden) 💰 ~$60–$180
  • Pick up rental car in Queenstown and drive south along Lake Wakatipu
  • Stop at Kingston for lake views and the vintage Kingston Flyer display (free)
  • Arrive Te Anau — walk the lakefront (best lake views in NZ, penguins sometimes visible at dusk)
  • Explore Te Anau township — book Doubtful Sound tour for Day 4 if not pre-booked
  • Te Anau Glowworm Caves evening tour (Real Journeys — 2h, $60 adult / $25 child — MUST BOOK)
Tips:
  • The glowworm cave tour is a highlight — book it for Day 1 evening or Day 2 morning
  • Te Anau DOC visitor centre is excellent — free maps and wildlife info for the kids
  • Fuel up in Te Anau — there’s no petrol at Milford Sound
🏕️ Stay: Te Anau (holiday park, motel, or Fiordland National Park camp) Find accommodation →
Day 2

The Milford Road — NZ’s Most Spectacular Drive

📍 Te Anau → Milford Sound 🚗 2h 45m (119km — the iconic Milford Road) 💰 ~$180–$380
  • Mirror Lakes stop (20 mins from Te Anau) — perfect still-water reflections, free
  • The Avenue of the Disappearing Mountain viewpoint
  • Lake Gunn nature walk (45 mins, beech forest, free)
  • Homer Tunnel — 1.2km hand-carved tunnel through sheer rock (slow down, single lane sections)
  • Arrive Milford Sound — Real Journeys or Southern Discoveries 2h cruise ($90 adult / $25 child)
  • Milford foreshore walk — waterfalls you can walk behind
Tips:
  • Leave Te Anau by 8am to beat tour buses at Milford — midday is very busy
  • Sandflies at Milford are fierce — DEET repellent is essential
  • Book the cruise with a scenic flight option back — spectacular and saves driving time ($350+ pp)
🏕️ Stay: Milford Sound Lodge (book months ahead) or return to Te Anau (2h45 back) Find accommodation →
Day 3

Milford Morning Kayak + Return to Te Anau

📍 Milford Sound / Te Anau 💰 ~$130–$330

  • Kayak to Stirling Falls — paddle under an active waterfall (kids will love it)
  • Picnic lunch at the Milford foreshore
  • Drive back to Te Anau (2h 45m) — you’ll see everything differently going the other way
  • Evening: explore Te Anau, lakefront walk at sunset
Tips:
  • The early morning kayak on Milford is magical — flat water, mist, waterfalls
  • Stay 2 nights at Milford Lodge if budget allows — sunrise over the fiord is unforgettable
  • Milford has excellent rainforest walks starting from the lodge — free
🏕️ Stay: Te Anau Find accommodation →
Day 4

Doubtful Sound — The Sound of Silence

📍 Te Anau → Manapouri → Doubtful Sound 🚗 45 mins to Manapouri (where Doubtful Sound tours depart) 💰 ~$295–$590 (cruise only — includes lunch)
  • Full-day Doubtful Sound cruise — departs Manapouri Wharf 9am (Real Journeys — $295 adult / $90 child)
  • Boat across Lake Manapouri, bus over Wilmot Pass, boat into Doubtful Sound
  • 3x deeper and 10x larger than Milford — far fewer tourists, dolphins, fur seals likely
  • Lunch onboard included
  • Return to Te Anau by 6pm
Tips:
  • Doubtful Sound is more remote and dramatic than Milford — many say it’s even better
  • Kids under 5 are usually free or heavily discounted — check Real Journeys site
  • The Wilmot Pass bus section has incredible views of the Fiordland mountains

  • Drive back north — stop in Queenstown for lunch on the waterfront
  • Arrive Wanaka — Wanaka Puzzling World (1.5h, kids aged 5–14 love it, $24 adult / $17 child)
  • Walk to ‘That Wanaka Tree’ (10 min lakefront walk, Instagram-famous willow in the lake)
  • Lake Wanaka beach — swim and paddle if warm enough

  • Lake Hawea short detour (15 mins) — uncrowded turquoise lake, great swim spot
  • Drive to Queenstown Airport — return car, fly out
Tips:
  • Queenstown Airport is 1h from Wanaka — allow buffer time in peak season (traffic on Crown Range)
  • The Crown Range Road (via Cardrona) is more scenic but slower — great if time allows
🏕️ Stay: Queenstown Airport area or overnight before early flight Find accommodation →

FAQ

Can toddlers do Milford Sound?

Absolutely — the cruise is easy for all ages and toddlers are usually free or heavily discounted. The boat is large and stable. The Milford Road drive itself is a highlight the whole family will enjoy. Avoid the kayak with children under 5.

Do we need a 4WD to drive to Milford Sound?

No — SH94 to Milford Sound is fully sealed and suitable for any car. However, the Homer Tunnel section requires patience (single-lane priority sections). Check the NZTA road conditions app in winter as the road occasionally closes after heavy snowfall.

Is Milford or Doubtful Sound better for families?

Both are exceptional. Milford Sound is easier to access and has more dramatic close-up waterfalls. Doubtful Sound is bigger, quieter, and has a greater sense of wilderness — the bus over Wilmot Pass adds a fun element for kids. If budget allows, do both.
