Packing Tips for This Trip
- Old shoes for geothermal areas — sulphur mud is hard to remove
- Swimwear every day — thermal pools, lakes, and beaches throughout
- Layers for Tongariro even in summer
- Hobbiton booking confirmation on your phone
- Download offline maps for Northland — patchy coverage north of Kaitaia
FAQ
Is 10 days enough to see the North Island?
10 days covers the highlights well — Bay of Islands, Waitomo, Rotorua, Hobbiton, Taupo, and Wellington. You won't see everything (Coromandel, Hawke's Bay, East Cape are left for another trip), but this is a genuinely satisfying first North Island visit.
Is this itinerary too much driving for kids?
Most days are under 3 hours driving. Days 3 and 5 are the longest at 3 hours. Build in stops (Whangarei Falls, Tane Mahuta) to break them up. A campervan helps — kids can move around, play games, or sleep during drive time.
Can we do this in reverse (Wellington to Auckland)?
Yes — the route works equally well in reverse. Starting in Wellington and ending in Auckland gives you better morning light for Wai-O-Tapu and Tane Mahuta, and means you don't have to be at the Auckland airport on the first day.
