Day-by-Day Plan

Day 1

Queenstown Day

📍 Queenstown 🚗 Based in Queenstown 💰 ~$420
  • 9am: Skyline Gondola and Luge — cable car up, 3+ luge runs each, views of the Remarkables
  • 11:30am: Queenstown waterfront and central gardens — flat walk, duck pond, good playground
  • 12:30pm: Lunch on The Mall or Steamer Wharf — try Fergburger (expect a queue)
  • 2pm: Arrowtown (25min drive) — gold panning in the Arrow River ($8/person), historic Chinese village
  • 4pm: Lake Hayes or Queenstown beach for a walk or swim
  • Evening: Steamer Wharf restaurants or fish and chips at Frankton foreshore
Tips:
  • Buy Skyline Luge 5-run passes online — better value and avoids ticket queues
  • Fergburger is genuinely excellent but the queue can be 30-45min at lunch — go at 11:30 or 2pm
  • Arrowtown gold panning: sieve and pan are provided, kids find actual gold flakes every time
  • The Queenstown Gardens playground near the lakefront is excellent for under-5s

FAQ

Is 1 day enough in Queenstown with kids?

One day covers the family highlights well — luge, lake, Arrowtown. Two days lets you add the TSS Earnslaw steamship, Wanaka (45min), or Fiordland day trips. Most families feel they want more time.

What is the Queenstown Luge?

The Skyline Luge is a gravity-powered cart race down a sealed track on the hill above Queenstown. It's suitable for ages 3+ (3-6 year olds ride with an adult). 3 runs is the minimum — most families do 5. Buy online to save 15%.
