Yes — 2.5 hours each way is manageable with kids if you leave early. Wai-O-Tapu and Te Puia are genuinely world-class. If you have 2 days, stay overnight and add Hobbiton — that's the ideal combination.
What time does the Lady Knox Geyser erupt?
10:15am, every day, triggered artificially with soap. Arrive by 10:00am. This is the anchor time for your day — plan everything else around it.
Can we do Hobbiton as well on a day trip?
Not comfortably. Hobbiton is in Matamata (1h from Rotorua, not on the direct Auckland-Rotorua route). Adding it turns a 1-day trip into an 18-hour marathon. Stay overnight and do Hobbiton the next morning.
