Safest Beaches for Swimming with Kids
NZ beaches range from completely safe to genuinely dangerous. Always look for surf lifesaving flags and swim between them. The safest swimming beaches for families:
- **Kaiteriteri** (Nelson): Very sheltered, golden sand, clear water, gentle entry — consistently rated NZ's best family swimming beach
- **Paihia and Russell beaches** (Bay of Islands): Sheltered harbour beaches, calm water, ideal for young children
- **Mt Maunganui Main Beach**: Patrolled surf beach, flat water on calm days, excellent facilities
- **Ōhope Beach harbour side**: Protected by Ōhiwa Harbour, very calm water
- **Auckland east coast harbour beaches** (Cheltenham, Narrow Neck, Takapuna): Sheltered, good for young children
**Avoid for young children**: West Coast ocean beaches in both islands have heavy surf and dangerous rip currents. Never swim at unpatrolled surf beaches with children.
Coromandel Peninsula — Best Family Beach Region
The Coromandel Peninsula is the best family beach destination in the North Island for a combination of reasons: multiple spectacular beaches within easy driving distance, excellent camping and holiday park facilities, good weather, warm water (by NZ standards, 20–22°C in summer), and unique experiences (Hot Water Beach, Cathedral Cove walk, kayaking).
Best Coromandel base for families: **Whitianga** — central location, good accommodation, boat tours to Cathedral Cove, access to both east and west coast beaches. Mercury Bay (Hahei area) has the best beaches.
Driving time from Auckland: 3–4 hours via Thames (allow for traffic in school holidays).
- Hahei — Cathedral Cove walk (1.5 hours return), spectacular sea cave, snorkelling
- Hot Water Beach — dig your own hot pool in the sand (2 hours either side of low tide)
- New Chums Beach — 20-minute walk, no cars, entirely unspoilt
- Whangamatā — excellent surf beach, good for learners
- Mercury Bay — calm, sheltered swimming, excellent for young children
Abel Tasman — Best South Island Beach
Abel Tasman National Park has New Zealand's most beautiful beaches by most measures — golden sand, clear turquoise water, no cars, no development, native bush. Families access it via water taxi from Marahau or Kaiteriteri (3 minutes from Motueka). Kaiteriteri Beach itself is excellent for young children and has good holiday park facilities nearby.
For families with children 7+, an overnight walk in the Abel Tasman (staying in DOC huts or lodges) is a spectacular experience. The coastal track is well-formed and graded easy-moderate. Water taxis can drop you in and collect you out, meaning you can tailor the distance.
Beach Safety in NZ — Important for Families
- Always swim between the flags at patrolled beaches — flags indicate safest swimming zone and patrolled area
- NZ surf lifesaving season is October–April at most beaches; outside this, many beaches are unpatrolled
- Rip currents are the main danger at surf beaches — if caught in a rip, float and swim parallel to shore
- West Coast ocean beaches (both islands) are not for swimming — dangerous surf and rip currents
- NZ UV is among the highest in the world — SPF50+ sunscreen is essential, reapply every 2 hours
- Rock pools are popular with kids — wear water shoes on rocky shores, check tide times
- Sandflies are severe in the South Island (particularly Fiordland and West Coast) — bring insect repellent
- Check beach warning signage — red flags mean no swimming, yellow/red flags indicate patrol area
Beach Holidays with Young Children — Tips
- Go early morning (8–10am) — cooler, less UV, less crowded, often calmer water
- Bring a beach tent or UV shelter — midday sun in NZ summer is genuinely intense
- Pack reusable nappy-change supplies if you have babies/toddlers — changing facilities at beaches vary
- Sand toys are worth bringing — kids will play in NZ beach sand for hours
- Reef shoes/water sandals for rocky beaches and rock pools
- Look for patrolled beaches with lifeguards — Surf Life Saving NZ patrol 90+ beaches in summer
- Holiday parks near beaches are often the best base — pools, playgrounds, and a kitchen make beach days easier
- The Coromandel and Bay of Plenty are the warmest for swimming — avoid South Island beaches in winter
