The NZ Family Bucket List — 50 Experiences
We've grouped these loosely by type, but there's no order of importance — every family will have a different top 10.

- **Watch a geyser erupt at Whakarewarewa, Rotorua** — the Pōhutu geyser erupts up to 20 times a day. Kids are reliably amazed.
- **Walk through boiling mud pools at Kuirau Park, Rotorua** — completely free, right in the middle of town, and genuinely spectacular.
- **Explore Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland** — the Artist's Palette and Champagne Pool are unlike anything else on earth. Ages 4+.

- **Swim in the Waikite Valley hot pools** — natural geothermal pools south of Rotorua, far quieter than commercial options.
- **Walk through the Craters of the Moon, Taupo** — free DOC reserve with steaming craters, boiling mud, and sulphur vents. Flat and easy walk.
Wildlife Encounters
- **See a kiwi bird up close at Rainbow Springs, Rotorua** — the Kiwi Encounter lets you watch kiwi in low-light conditions. Genuinely moving experience.
- **Watch yellow-eyed penguins come ashore at Otago Peninsula** — viewing hides let you watch wild penguins return from the sea at dusk. Book ahead.
- **Spot fur seals on the Kaikōura Peninsula** — they sleep on the rocks by the road. You can walk within metres (with care). Free.
- **Go whale watching at Kaikōura** — sperm whales year-round, humpbacks in season. Whale Watch Kaikōura is world-class. Ages 3+.
- **See royal albatross at Taiaroa Head, Dunedin** — the only mainland royal albatross colony in the world. Guided tours required.

Iconic NZ Experiences
- **Ride the Rotorua luge at Skyline** — three tracks from scenic to fast. Kids aged 3+ on tandem, 7+ solo. Consistently the most-mentioned family highlight in NZ.
- **Explore the Waitomo Glowworm Caves** — boat through an underground cave lit by thousands of glowworms. Ages 4+. Book ahead.
- **Take the Skyline Gondola in Queenstown** — stunning views over the Remarkables and Lake Wakatipu. Sunset trip is spectacular.
- **Ride a jet boat on the Shotover River, Queenstown** — 85km/h through narrow gorges with 360-degree spins. Ages 3+ (minimum height applies).
- **Walk across the Auckland Harbour Bridge** — AJ Hackett Bungy runs bridge climbs. The views across Auckland are outstanding.
- **Take the Interislander ferry across the Cook Strait** — the ferry crossing through the Marlborough Sounds is genuinely spectacular. Treat it as an attraction, not just transport.
- **Watch a live hāngi being prepared and cooked** — traditional Māori earth oven cooking. Te Puia and Whakarewarewa both offer authentic experiences.
- **See the All Blacks play at Eden Park** — if the timing works, rugby at Eden Park is a bucket list experience in itself.
Beaches & Water
- **Swim at Cathedral Cove, Hahei** — walk 1.5 hours to reach it (or take a water taxi), swim through the sea cave, snorkel. Genuinely world-class.
- **Kayak in Abel Tasman National Park** — golden sand beaches only accessible by water. Guided day kayak tours ideal for families with children 8+.
- **Go body boarding at Mount Maunganui** — the main beach has consistent small waves perfect for beginners. Boards available for hire.
- **Swim at Kaiteriteri Beach, Nelson** — sheltered, golden sand, crystal clear. Consistently voted NZ's best family swimming beach.
- **Look for crabs and starfish in the rock pools at Kaikōura** — the rock platform at the seal colony is full of marine life at low tide.

- **Take a Milford Sound cruise** — waterfalls, dolphins, seals, and sheer granite walls. One of the great natural wonders of the world. Worth every cent.
Culture & History

- **Visit Arrowtown and pan for gold** — the Chinese settlement and autumn leaves are beautiful; kids love gold panning in the Arrow River.

- **Take a guided Māori cultural tour at Whakarewarewa** — a living Māori village where guides explain the culture first-hand, not as performance.
- **Walk through the Otago Central Rail Trail** — best done by bike for families; the old Central Otago gold rush country is beautiful and historically rich.
- **Visit Zealandia Ecosanctuary, Wellington** — 225-hectare predator-free sanctuary with tuatara, kākā, wētā and rare birds. Night tour is exceptional.
Adventure

- **Walk the Tongariro Alpine Crossing (family section)** — the full crossing suits fit families with teens 14+. The Mangatepopo Valley lower section is achievable with younger children.
- **Zorb down a hill in Rotorua** — rolling downhill in a giant inflatable ball is as ridiculous and fun as it sounds. Ages 3+.
- **Take a helicopter to the Franz Josef glacier** — landing on a glacier is genuinely awe-inspiring. Ages 3+, costs are high but worth it for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
- **Cycle the Hauraki Rail Trail** — flat, safe, and 182km of converted rail corridor through the Coromandel and Hauraki. Perfect for family cycling, do sections not the whole thing.
Slow Moments Worth Having
- **Watch the stars from Lake Tekapo** — the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve is one of the best stargazing locations on earth. Book a telescope session at the Mt John Observatory.
- **Spend a night at a DOC campground on the beach** — at sites like Totaranui (Abel Tasman), you fall asleep to the sound of waves. No power, no facilities, completely extraordinary.
- **Eat fish and chips on a NZ beach** — sit on the sea wall with a paper parcel, watching the surf. It's the most NZ thing you can do.
- **Visit a Saturday farmers market** — Wellington's Harbourside Market, Christchurch's Market, and Rotorua's Night Market all show local NZ food culture at its best.
- **Watch the sunset from a hill above any NZ city** — Mount Victoria in Wellington, One Tree Hill in Auckland, or Signal Hill in Dunedin — all free, all outstanding.
- **Collect shells and build a sandcastle on a deserted NZ beach** — find a quiet beach on the Coromandel, Northland, or Marlborough Sounds where you're the only people there. This is possible in New Zealand in ways it isn't in most of the world.
