Who Should Visit NZ in May?
- Families flexible with term-time travel (no NZ school holidays in May)
- Budget-conscious families — May is one of the cheapest months for campervans and accommodation
- Families who hate crowds — popular spots like Milford Sound and Queenstown are genuinely quieter
- Families with older kids (8+) who can handle cool weather and shorter daylight hours
- Note: May is not ideal for beach holidays or water activities — sea temperatures are cooling quickly

Best Destinations in NZ in May
- Auckland: great for museums (Auckland Museum free for kids), aquarium, and the wider Auckland region. Urban attractions are unaffected by weather.
- Nelson: May is often sunny and settled in the Top of the South — a hidden gem for autumn travel. Abel Tasman is accessible and beautiful.
- Queenstown: last of the autumn colours, far fewer tourists, and excellent restaurant deals. Luge and gondola run year-round.
- Rotorua: thermal attractions are actually better in cooler months — the steam is more dramatic. Whio (blue duck) sightings are easier in May.
- Marlborough Sounds: magical in autumn. Boat trips operate year-round. Much cheaper than January.
