Top October Experiences for Families
- Queenstown hiking: the skifield roads are open to walkers and the views from the Remarkables ranges are extraordinary without winter clothing required
- Northland coast: 90 Mile Beach, Cape Reinga, and Ninety Mile Beach drives are all excellent in October — uncrowded and spectacular
- Coromandel: Hot Water Beach and Cathedral Cove are accessible and stunning without the summer crowds
- Napier / Hawke's Bay: Art Deco city, excellent food scene, family beach time — October is ideal and very affordable
- Nelson / Abel Tasman: the coastal walk conditions are perfect in October. Water taxis run and campsite availability is much easier than January.
October School Holidays Overlap
The NZ spring school holidays (approx Sept 26 – Oct 11) mean early October can be slightly busier and more expensive than mid-October onwards. From October 12 onwards, you get full spring weather with term-time prices — one of the best travel windows of the year.
What to Book in October
- School holiday week accommodation (Oct 1-11): book 4-6 weeks ahead for popular destinations
- Abel Tasman water taxis: book ahead for the school holiday period
- Milford Sound cruises: October is the wettest month in Fiordland — but the waterfalls are spectacular. Book a flexible-date ticket.
- From mid-October onwards: short-notice bookings are generally fine outside of Queenstown/Wanaka
- School holiday activity programmes: many attractions run October holiday specials — check local listings
