What Christchurch Offers Families in 2026
Best Paid Activities in Christchurch with Kids
International Antarctic Centre (All Ages) — The Standout
Built adjacent to Christchurch International Airport (NZ's main Antarctic logistics hub), the Antarctic Centre is one of the best family attractions in New Zealand regardless of weather. Highlights: the Hagglund all-terrain vehicle ride (a real Antarctic snow vehicle taken over rough terrain — genuinely exciting for all ages), the storm room (you stand inside a simulated polar blizzard, with wind chill dropping to -18°C), and the little blue penguin colony with twice-daily feeding sessions.
The facility is fully indoor and can fill 3–4 hours. Entry approx $59/adult, $35/child. Expensive but high value — this is a full-morning or afternoon activity. Book online to avoid queues.
Christchurch Gondola (Ages 3+)
The gondola ascends 500m up the Port Hills to the rim of an ancient volcanic crater, with views over the Canterbury Plains, the Alps to the west, and the Pacific Ocean to the east. At the top: a Time Tunnel ride through Christchurch's geological and human history (good for ages 7+), a café, and walking access to the Summit Road.
The Summit Road walk (free once you're at the top) takes you along the crater rim — the best views in the Christchurch area and excellent for fit kids aged 7+. Entry approx $32/adult, $14/child. A 2-3 hour outing.
Willowbank Wildlife Reserve (All Ages)
On the northern edge of Christchurch, Willowbank is a wildlife reserve with NZ native species (kiwi, tuatara, native birds) and heritage farm animals in a more relaxed setting than a standard zoo. The kiwi nocturnal house is excellent — Willowbank has one of the best kiwi viewing experiences in the South Island. The Kō Tāne Māori cultural experience runs evenings (separate booking). Entry approx $32/adult, $16/child. Allow 2–3 hours.
Orana Wildlife Park (All Ages)
NZ's only open-range zoo, 20 minutes from central Christchurch. African animals (giraffe, rhino, cheetah, zebra) alongside NZ native species. The giraffe feeding is the highlight — you can hand-feed giraffe from an elevated platform. The African drive-through section (your own car or a park vehicle) is unlike anything else in NZ. Entry approx $38/adult, $16/child. Allow 3–4 hours. Better than many international open-range zoos proportionally.
Free and Low-Cost Things to Do in Christchurch with Kids
Punting on the Avon River
A Christchurch institution. Flat-bottomed punts are poled along the Avon River through the Botanic Gardens — it's slow, gentle, and surprisingly engaging for kids who've never seen a flat river in a city centre. Tours depart from the Antigua Boat Sheds (the oldest surviving building in Christchurch). Entry approx $30/adult, $18/child for a 30-minute tour. The Boat Sheds also hire rowing boats and paddle boats for self-guided exploration (cheaper, and kids often prefer the control of their own boat).
Christchurch Botanic Gardens (Free)
Flat, beautiful, and free. The Botanic Gardens run along the Avon River in Hagley Park and have extensive conservatories (free entry), a children's playground, and a good café. The peacocks wandering freely through the gardens are reliably popular with young children. The information centre runs free guided walks. Allow 2–3 hours.
Hagley Park
Christchurch's version of Central Park — 165 hectares of open space surrounding the Botanic Gardens. Good for bikes, kites, and open-air energy burn. Free parkruns on Saturday mornings (2km junior run).
Street Art Tour (Self-Guided, Free)
Post-earthquake Christchurch has one of the best street art collections in New Zealand. A free self-guided walking map is available from the Christchurch i-SITE. The Waltham and Sydenham areas have the most concentrated murals — kids aged 8+ tend to engage well with the scale and variety. The Gap Filler project (post-quake community spaces in empty lots) produced some excellent permanent installations.
Ferrymead Heritage Park
A living history park in Ferrymead with vintage trams, steam trains, and working historic machinery. Entry approx $20/adult, $10/child. Better for kids interested in how old things work — ages 5–12 tend to engage most.
Christchurch with Toddlers and Babies
Under 2: Botanic Gardens (flat, pram-accessible), Hagley Park, and the Riverside Market (indoor food hall, free entry). The Antarctic Centre penguin viewing works at all ages.
Ages 2–4: Willowbank Wildlife Reserve (relaxed pace, close animal encounters), Botanic Gardens conservatories (warm and stimulating in any weather), and the Gondola (the ride itself is exciting even if the history tunnel is over their heads).
Ages 5+: The Antarctic Centre Hagglund ride and storm room both open up. Orana Wildlife Park giraffe feeding. Punting on the Avon. This is Christchurch's sweet spot for family activities.
Day Trips from Christchurch with Kids
Hanmer Springs (1.5 Hours North)
Hanmer Springs is a small alpine village with thermal pools — an excellent day trip or overnight stay. The Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa has pools ranging from family-friendly (cooler, shallow) to adult-only. Entry approx $30/adult, $20/child. There's also a luge (smaller than Queenstown's but good for ages 4+), bush walks, and a playground. An excellent rainy-day South Island option.
Akaroa (1 Hour East)
A French-influenced harbour village on Banks Peninsula. The drive over the Port Hills is spectacular. Akaroa is known for Hector's dolphins (the world's smallest dolphin, endemic to NZ) — swim-with-dolphins tours run from the harbour (minimum age typically 8 for swimming, 3 for watching). The village has good cafés and a free foreshore walk. Combine with a visit to the Giant's House garden (entry fee) for older kids who appreciate quirky art.
Practical Tips for Families
- The Antarctic Centre is best booked online and visited on arrival day — it's close to the airport and excellent for recovering from a flight before heading into town.
- Parking in central Christchurch: the city has good free parking outside the central square area. The inner-city parking buildings are reasonably priced by NZ standards.
- Two days is enough for the main attractions: Day 1 — Antarctic Centre + Botanic Gardens + punting. Day 2 — Gondola + Willowbank + Orana or Ferrymead.
- Christchurch is the gateway to the South Island: most South Island road trips start and end here. Build in 2 days at the start or end of a bigger trip.
- Central Christchurch rebuild: some areas are still construction zones. Check that specific venues are open before visiting — the Christchurch Museum in particular was still being rebuilt as of 2026.
