January and February are consistently the best months across most of NZ — warm, long days, most activities running. December is peak season but more expensive and crowded. October–November is the best shoulder season for value-conscious families.
Yes — especially if you're ski-focused. Queenstown and Wanaka are excellent for skiing in July–August. For non-ski families, winter is much quieter and cheaper, though the South Island in particular gets cold. Rotorua, Auckland and Wellington work well year-round.
May–September (excluding school holiday weeks in July) offers the cheapest accommodation and campervan rates. Shoulder seasons — October–November and March–April — offer a good balance of decent weather and lower prices.
