Free and Cheap Indoor Attractions
Te Papa is the jewel of a Wellington winter — free entry, hours of hands-on fun, and the superb Te Taiao Nature zone with the earthquake house and the colossal squid. School-holiday programmes add extra free activities. It's our default rainy-day plan and we've never run out of things to do.
Nearby, the Wellington Museum (free) tells the city's maritime story with the spooky, kid-loved Wellington Heritage gallery, and Space Place at the Carter Observatory up the cable car runs winter stargazing shows.
- Te Papa — free, Te Taiao nature zone, earthquake house, holiday programmes
- Wellington Museum — free, maritime history, ghostly heritage gallery
- Space Place / Carter Observatory — planetarium and stargazing, via the cable car (a fun ride in itself)
- Cable Car & Botanic Garden — cheap ride up, free walk down through the gardens
- City Gallery and the central library hubs — free, with kids' activities
Nature and Wildlife in Winter
Zealandia is magic on a still winter morning — fewer people, active birds, and the chance to spot tuatara and kākā up close. The fully fenced sanctuary is just minutes from town; the night tours (ticketed) are a great chance for older kids to hear a wild kiwi. Adult entry is around $25, kids under 5 free.
Rug up for the Wellington waterfront walk, watch the harbour from the wharf, and finish at Seatoun's Chocolate Fish Café for a hot chocolate by the water — a proper Wellington winter ritual.
- Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne — fenced eco-sanctuary, ~$25/adult, day and night tours
- Wellington waterfront walk — free, harbour views, playgrounds at Frank Kitts Park
- Chocolate Fish Café, Scorching Bay/Seatoun — hot chocolate by the sea
- Wellington Zoo — open all winter; cosy with the meerkats and red pandas
- ZEALANDIA-adjacent Karori and Otari-Wilton's Bush — free native forest walks
Movie Magic and Making Things
Wellington is the home of Weta — the Weta Workshop Unleashed and Weta Cave experiences in Miramar are a hit with movie-mad tweens and teens (tours ticketed, the Cave shop is free to browse). It's the perfect indoor splurge for a wet afternoon.
For hands-on creativity, look out for free school-holiday craft and Matariki workshops at the city's libraries and at Capital E in the central city.
- Weta Workshop Unleashed, Miramar — guided film-effects tour, great for tweens/teens
- Weta Cave — free entry shop and mini-museum
- Capital E — kids' creative activities and shows in the central city
- Library Matariki workshops — free craft and storytime through the holidays
Rainy-Day and Windy-Day Backups
Wellington weather can turn on a dime, so it pays to keep a warm, dry option ready. Bowl-a-Rama on the waterfront, the trampoline parks, indoor climbing and the cinema all deliver when the southerly's howling.
- Bowl-a-Rama, waterfront — ten-pin bowling right in town
- Trampoline parks — Jump Wellington and others, ~$20/child/hour
- Clip 'n Climb / indoor climbing — ages 4+
- Freyberg and Kilbirnie pools — warm indoor swims and hydroslides
- Cinema — cheap school-holiday kids' sessions
Matariki Events in Wellington
Matariki (Friday 10 July 2026) is a big deal in the capital, with free light trails, the harbourside Ahi Kā fire events in some years, dawn ceremonies, markets and storytelling. The waterfront and Te Papa are usually at the centre of it, and libraries run free whānau craft sessions. Check the Wellington City Council and Te Papa What's On pages closer to the date for the 2026 programme.
A Sample Winter Holiday Day
A classic wet-weather Wellington day we love: open Te Papa at 10am for the nature zone and whatever the holiday programme's running, eat a packed lunch overlooking the harbour, then ride the cable car up and walk down through the Botanic Garden if there's a dry spell. Finish with a hot chocolate at the Chocolate Fish. Cost for a family of four: around $30, mostly the cable car.
