Is Fiji Good for Families?

Fiji is New Zealand's most popular overseas family destination — and it's easy to see why. At 3.5 hours from Auckland, it's barely further than Queenstown by plane, yet you're in the tropics with some of the world's best family resorts. The catch: it can be expensive. A week at a decent Mamanuca Islands resort for a family of 4 easily costs NZ$8,000–15,000 all-in. There are budget strategies that work, but go in with open eyes.

Our verdict

Outstanding for families who want a guaranteed beach holiday with resort infrastructure. Expensive, but the short flight and unbeatable tropical setting make it NZ's go-to Pacific escape.

Budget (family of 4)

NZ$600–1,500/day all-in — accommodation, food, activities and local transport.

Mamanuca Islands (Malolo, Matamanoa, Tokoriki area)

The classic Fiji postcard — white sand, calm turquoise water, family resorts

The Mamanuca Islands sit 30–45 minutes by fast boat from Nadi airport. This is where most of the famous family resorts are. Calm lagoon conditions make them ideal for young kids. The snorkelling is superb right off the beach — no boat trip needed. South Sea Island (15 min from Port Denarau) is the most accessible day trip for families.

Coral Coast (Viti Levu — Sigatoka area)

More affordable than the islands — the budget-smart family choice

The Coral Coast on Viti Levu's main island is 1.5 hours drive from Nadi airport. It's where you find more affordable resorts (NZ$250–450/night) without paying Mamanuca water-taxi prices. Less pristine than the outer islands but still great beaches, the Kula Eco Park (native wildlife), and Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park. Good option for families watching the budget.

Yasawa Islands

Remote, stunning, quieter — better for teens than toddlers

The Yasawa Islands are the most dramatic in Fiji — volcanic peaks, blue lagoons, cave snorkelling. Access is via the Yasawa Flyer ferry (budget) or seaplane (expensive but magical). Less resort infrastructure than Mamanuca, more boutique lodges. Brilliant for older kids and teens who can appreciate the ruggedness. The Blue Lagoon Caves are genuinely world-class.
