Is Australia (Gold Coast) Good for Families?

The Gold Coast is New Zealand's most popular short-haul family destination for good reason: 2.5 hours from Auckland, 70km of beaches, and some of the world's best theme parks. Dreamworld, Warner Bros. Movie World, Sea World, and Wet'n'Wild are all within 20 minutes of each other. For families with kids aged 4-14, it is hard to beat for a 5-7 day trip. The costs are moderate (similar to a South Island road trip), the weather is reliably warm from May-November, and the pace is unapologetically focused on family fun.

Our verdict

The easiest family trip from NZ. No culture barrier, warm weather in NZ's winter months, and more family entertainment infrastructure than anywhere in the Southern Hemisphere. Not for families who want authentic cultural experiences — it is unapologetically a theme park and beach destination.

Budget (family of 4)

NZ$400-900/day all-in — accommodation, food, activities and local transport.

Best Places in Australia (Gold Coast) for Families

NZ$200-350/day for family 4 at theme parks. Multi-park pass ($180-220/adult) gives 14 days entry to multiple parks — best value.

Theme Parks — Dreamworld, Movie World, Sea World

The reason most NZ families go to the Gold Coast — world-class theme park experiences

The Gold Coast's theme parks are the best in the Southern Hemisphere. Dreamworld has Australia's most thrilling rides including the Tower of Terror II and Buzzsaw. Warner Bros. Movie World has the DC Super Heroes area perfect for 4-10 year olds. Sea World combines marine animal experiences (dolphins, polar bears) with good rides. Buy a multi-park pass — it saves 30-40% vs individual day tickets.

Beach is free. Accommodation on Surfers Paradise Esplanade: NZ$200-500/night. Eating out: NZ$80-150/day family 4.

Surfers Paradise and Main Beach

Iconic beach strip — excellent swimming, patrolled beaches, great base

Surfers Paradise has exactly what families need: patrolled beaches from 7am, calm surf suitable for all ages, and a beachfront strip with cafes, restaurants, and accommodation. The beaches are better and safer than Sydney's. The Surfers Paradise night market (Wednesday, Friday, Saturday) is excellent for kids with a huge variety of street food.

Mostly free — NZ$20-60/person for paid walks

Hinterland — Tamborine Mountain, Natural Bridge

Rainforest day trips from the beach — waterfalls, glowworms, and cheese

The Gold Coast hinterland is 45 minutes from Surfers Paradise and feels like another world — subtropical rainforest, waterfalls, and views from Tamborine Mountain's Gallery Walk. Natural Bridge in Springbrook National Park has glowworms in a cave behind a waterfall (free, self-guided, stunning). Tamborine Mountain has excellent fudge shops and rainforest walks kids enjoy.
