Is Samoa Good for Families?

Samoa is what the rest of the Pacific used to be — genuinely authentic, affordable, and not yet overrun with resort infrastructure. It's roughly half the cost of Fiji and Cook Islands, but you trade luxury resorts for real Samoan culture, incredible natural landscapes, and the warmest welcome in the Pacific. Fa'a Samoa (the Samoan way) means family and hospitality are central to everything. NZ families with Samoan heritage will find this trip particularly moving. For other kiwi families, it's an extraordinary window into a culture that's deeply connected to NZ.

Our verdict

The most authentic and affordable Pacific island trip from NZ. Not for families who need five-star resort infrastructure — but for those who want real Pacific culture, stunning natural attractions, and incredible value, Samoa delivers.

Budget (family of 4)

NZ$300–600/day all-in — accommodation, food, activities and local transport.

Best Places in Samoa for Families

Budget NZ$280–500/day family of 4 including a beachfront fale or mid-range hotel

Upolu Island (Apia, Lalomanu Beach, South Coast)

The main island — cultural capital plus Samoa's most iconic beaches

Most families base themselves on Upolu. Apia is a compact, manageable capital with good markets, restaurants, and Robert Louis Stevenson's tomb at Vailima. The south coast has Samoa's most famous natural attractions. Lalomanu Beach is often listed as one of the Pacific's most beautiful beaches — palm trees, white sand, and calm lagoon water. The fale accommodation here (open-sided beach huts, NZ$80–120/night/family including meals) is an incredible experience.

To Sua Ocean Trench (NZ$20 entry — the most spectacular natural pool in the Pacific) Lalomanu Beach and overnight fale stay Piula Cave Pool (free natural freshwater swimming pool inside a cave)
Budget NZ$250–400/day on Savai'i. Fewer accommodation options — book well ahead.

Savai'i Island

The big island — untouched, volcanic, for adventurous families

Savai'i is the largest Polynesian island outside Hawaii, but has almost no tourist infrastructure. It's connected to Upolu by a 2.5-hour ferry. Savai'i is for adventurous families who want to see the real Samoa — lava fields from a 1905 eruption that buried two villages, Dwarf's Cave (the largest lava tube in the Southern Hemisphere), Falealupo rainforest canopy walk, and the ancient Pulemelei Mound (Polynesia's largest ancient pyramid). A 2-night detour from Upolu is worthwhile for families with kids aged 8+.
