Is Thailand Good for Families?

Thailand is one of the best-value family destinations in the world — warm all year, incredible food, friendly locals, and a fraction of NZ prices. A family of 4 can live extremely well for NZ$200–250/day including a beach resort, food, and daily activities. The key is knowing which parts of Thailand suit families with kids.

Our verdict

Excellent for families, especially with kids aged 5+. Younger kids do well too if you pick the right destinations and go in the dry season.

Best Places in Thailand for Families

Chiang Mai

Temples, elephants, and cool mountain air — the best family city in Thailand

Chiang Mai has the best ethical elephant experiences in Asia, fantastic street food, and a charming old city. Cooler than Bangkok, much less frantic, and very child-friendly. A week here is better than a week in Bangkok for most families.

Elephant Nature Park (ethical, book in advance) Old City temples (Doi Suthep is the most stunning) Sunday Walking Street night market
Budget NZ$180–280/day family of 4

Krabi / Ao Nang

Thailand's most spectacular beaches — dramatic limestone cliffs, calm water

Krabi is more relaxed and less crowded than Phuket, with better beaches. The four islands boat trip ($40/person) is unmissable. Railay Beach (boat access only) is one of the world's most beautiful beaches.

Koh Lanta

Quieter, cheaper, and better for younger kids than Phuket or Koh Samui

Koh Lanta is what Koh Samui used to be — relaxed, beautiful, with long sandy beaches and calm water on the west coast. Far fewer party tourists than other Thai islands. Perfect for families with under-10s.
