Is Vietnam Good for Families?

Vietnam is one of the most rewarding family destinations in Asia — a country of spectacular landscapes, 4,000 years of history, extraordinary food, and near-Bali prices. Ha Long Bay is genuinely one of the world's great travel experiences. It takes more planning than Bali but rewards families with richer, more memorable experiences.

Our verdict

Excellent for families with kids 6+. Best suited to families who enjoy history and culture alongside beaches. Best done with a local guide or organised itinerary.

Budget (family of 4)

NZ$140–280/day all-in — accommodation, food, activities and local transport.

Best Places in Vietnam for Families

Budget NZ$250–400/day family of 4 during cruise (all-inclusive)

Ha Long Bay

One of the world's seven natural wonders — absolutely unmissable

Ha Long Bay is the highlight of any Vietnam trip. 1,600 limestone islands rising from jade-green water — unlike anything else on earth. Book a 2-night cruise on a junk boat (from NZ$250/adult, NZ$160/child). Kids love the kayaking, the floating villages, and sleeping in the cabin as the boat moves.

2-night junk boat cruise (book through reputable operator — avoid bottom-budget boats) Kayaking through limestone caves Visiting Sung Sot Cave (most accessible)
Budget NZ$150–250/day family of 4

Hoi An

The most beautiful town in Vietnam — lanterns, tailors, and ancient streets

Hoi An's ancient town is a UNESCO World Heritage site — and genuinely magical at night when thousands of lanterns are lit. The beach (An Bang Beach, 4km away) is excellent. Tailors can make custom kids' clothing overnight for $15–25. The town is compact, car-free in the centre, and very walkable with kids.

Ancient town by night (lantern festival on the 14th of each month) Cooking class — Morning Glory in the market is excellent for families An Bang Beach (safe swimming, great cafes)
Budget NZ$140–230/day family of 4

Hanoi

Chaotic, historic, and fascinating — the beating heart of Vietnam

Hanoi is overwhelming at first but incredibly rewarding. The Old Quarter is a living museum — 36 ancient street guilds, each specialising in one trade. Ho Chi Minh's mausoleum, Hoan Kiem Lake, and the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology are all world-class. Best for families with kids 8+ who can handle the chaos.

Hoan Kiem Lake and Ngoc Son Temple (walk the red bridge to the island) Vietnam Museum of Ethnology (NZ$5 entry, extraordinary) Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum complex (free, arrive early)
