Dolphin Watching Cruise

The Bay of Islands Dolphin Watching Cruise is an unforgettable experience for families. With a resident pod of bottlenose dolphins and frequent visitors, the chances of spotting these amazing creatures are high. We took our kids on this 3.5-hour cruise and can't wait to share our honest review with you.

What to Expect

The cruise itself was well-organized, and the crew were knowledgeable and friendly. They provided interesting facts about the dolphins and their habitat, which our kids found fascinating. The highlight of the trip was, of course, seeing the dolphins up close, and we were lucky enough to have a few swim alongside the boat.

With kids aged 2+ and above, this activity is perfect for families. The cruise operators also offer a swim-with option, but this depends on the dolphins' cooperation. We opted for the watch-from-the-boat option, which was just as enjoyable.

The only downside was the seasickness that affected one of our kids. So, if your child is prone to motion sickness, be sure to take the necessary precautions before the cruise.

Value for Money and Insider Tips

We found the cruise to be good value for money, considering the unique experience it offers. To make the most of your trip, book early to avoid disappointment, especially during peak season. You can also save money by booking online in advance or looking out for special deals and discounts.

Additionally, be sure to pack snacks, sunscreen, and a camera to capture those special moments. And, if you're planning to swim with the dolphins, don't forget your swimsuit and towel.

Operators & Sighting Guarantees

Several established operators run dolphin and marine cruises out of Paihia, and most offer a sighting guarantee — if you don't see dolphins on your trip, you can usually go again free of charge. This is a genuinely valuable policy in winter, when sightings, while still common, are a little less predictable. Always check the exact terms before you book: some guarantees apply only within a set period, and some require you to rebook within the same season.

It's worth noting that, in line with NZ marine mammal regulations, swimming with dolphins is increasingly restricted — most family trips are now watch-from-the-boat experiences, which honestly works better with kids anyway. Compare a few operators on price, trip length and group size; smaller winter groups often mean a more personal experience.

What to Bring

A little preparation makes the cruise far more comfortable, especially in June. Dress everyone in warm, windproof layers — it's noticeably colder out on the water than on shore — and bring a waterproof jacket in case of spray or showers. If anyone in the family is prone to motion sickness, take seasickness tablets 30–60 minutes before departure, as the open water beyond the islands can get bumpy. Pack snacks and water, sunscreen (the glare off the sea is strong even in winter), and a camera or phone with a strap so it doesn't end up overboard.

Best Time to Visit and How to Book

The best time to visit the Bay of Islands for dolphin watching is during the summer months (December to February) when the weather is warm and sunny. However, the dolphins can be spotted year-round, so it's always a good time to visit.

To book your dolphin watching cruise, simply visit the operator's website or give them a call. You can also book through a local tour operator or visitor center in the Bay of Islands.
