Free Parks & Playgrounds
Auckland is blessed with enormous green spaces, and the playgrounds are some of the best in the country. Cornwall Park (next to One Tree Hill) is our top pick — the kids run wild while we watch the sheep graze, and there's a fantastic free playground plus the historic Acacia Cottage to explore. The Auckland Domain, the city's oldest park, has vast lawns perfect for picnics and a duck pond that always delights the little ones.
For something with a wow factor, head to the destination playground at Western Springs or the huge adventure playground at Barry Curtis Park in Flat Bush. Both are completely free and easily fill a morning.
- Cornwall Park & One Tree Hill — free playground, sheep, walking trails
- Auckland Domain — duck pond, lawns, free to enter
- Western Springs Park — lakeside walk, birdlife, playground
- Barry Curtis Park, Flat Bush — large adventure playground
- Potters Park, Balmoral — colourful modern playground
Free Beaches
Auckland sits between two harbours, so beaches are never far away. On the east coast, Mission Bay is our go-to — golden sand, a grassy reserve, a great playground and a fountain the kids love splashing in. Takapuna Beach on the North Shore has a stunning view of Rangitoto and rock pools to explore at low tide.
For a wilder west-coast experience, Cornwallis Beach in the Waitākere Ranges is calm and family-friendly, while the famous black sands of Karekare and Piha are spectacular (just supervise closely — these are surf beaches).
- Mission Bay — sand, playground, splash fountain, free
- Takapuna Beach — rock pools, Rangitoto views
- Cornwallis Beach — calm, sheltered, family-friendly
- Long Bay Regional Park — safe swimming, free entry
- Piha & Karekare — dramatic black-sand surf beaches
Free & Koha Museums
Several of Auckland's best museums are free or operate on a koha (donation) basis for New Zealand residents. The Auckland War Memorial Museum is free for Aucklanders (bring proof of address) and has an incredible natural history section with a moa skeleton and volcano simulator the kids never forget.
The Auckland Art Gallery has free general admission, and MOTAT (Museum of Transport and Technology) often runs free community days — check their website before you visit.
- Auckland War Memorial Museum — free for Auckland residents
- Auckland Art Gallery — free general admission
- Voyager NZ Maritime Museum — free for under-13s
- Stardome Observatory grounds — free to visit (shows ticketed)
Free Walks & Nature
Some of our best family days have cost us nothing more than petrol. Take the free passenger ferry views from the waterfront, walk the Wynyard Quarter and watch the boats, or wander up Mount Eden (Maungawhau) for a 360-degree view of the city and into a real volcanic crater.
The Wattle Bay and Ōrākei Basin walkways are flat, pram-friendly and full of birdlife. Pack a picnic and you've got a full day out for the price of sandwiches.
- Mount Eden (Maungawhau) summit walk — free, epic views
- Wynyard Quarter waterfront — boats, fountains, open space
- Ōrākei Basin walkway — flat, pram-friendly loop
- Ambury Regional Park — working farm, free to visit
