Botanic Gardens & Hagley Park
The Christchurch Botanic Gardens are free and absolutely stunning — our kids love the Margaret Mahy-style nature play, the rose garden, the giant glasshouses and feeding the ducks by the Avon River. Right next door, Hagley Park is one of the largest urban parks in the world, perfect for kicking a ball, riding bikes or having a picnic.
Just across town is the Margaret Mahy Family Playground — the biggest playground in the Southern Hemisphere and completely free. Plan to spend hours here.

Canterbury Museum is free (with a koha welcome) and a brilliant rainy-day option — the kids love the Antarctic gallery, the recreated Victorian street and the natural history halls. The Air Force Museum of New Zealand out at Wigram is also free and has real aircraft the kids can get up close to.
Quake City tells the story of the Canterbury earthquakes and is great for older kids (small entry fee), while the Christchurch Art Gallery is free.

For a wilder feel, the walks around Taylors Mistake and the Port Hills offer free coastal views over the whole city and out to Banks Peninsula.
