Hamilton Gardens
The crown jewel of the city and completely free to enter, Hamilton Gardens is genuinely world-class — it won International Garden of the Year for good reason. Kids love wandering between the themed enclosed gardens (the Italian Renaissance, the surreal Surrealist garden, the Chinese Scholar's garden) and there's plenty of open lawn for running. The café and a couple of newer feature gardens carry a small charge, but the core experience costs nothing.
Allow at least a couple of hours, bring a picnic, and let the kids treat it as a treasure hunt moving from one themed 'room' to the next.
- Hamilton Gardens — free entry, world-class themed gardens
- Picnic lawns and the riverside setting — free
- Enclosed themed gardens — like walking through different countries
- Some new feature gardens carry a small entry fee
The Waikato River & Walkways
The Waikato River Trails through the city are free, flat and pram-friendly, with plenty of spots to stop and watch the rowers go by. The Te Awa River Ride is a sealed walking and cycling path that runs for kilometres along the river — perfect for scooters and bikes. Pop in to spot the famous Riff Raff statue (from the Rocky Horror Picture Show) on Victoria Street while you're in town.

- Waikato River walkways — flat, pram-friendly, free
- Riff Raff statue, Victoria Street — free photo stop

Lakes, Parks & Playgrounds
Hamilton Lake Domain (Rotoroa) is a local favourite — a flat 3.8km loop around the lake, free playgrounds, ducks to watch, and room to bike or scooter. Memorial Park sits on the riverbank with a great playground and the paddle steamer wharf, while Claudelands and the eastern suburbs have excellent free play areas. There are splash pads and water-play spots that are brilliant (and free) in the warmer months.

- Claudelands Park — large free playground and event grounds

Cheap Treats & Animal Encounters
Hamilton Zoo is a fantastic outing and great value for what it is — not free, but adult entry is modest and under-5s are free, with chimps, giraffes, rhinos and a walk-through aviary. For a free animal fix, the lake and riverside are full of birdlife, and the SkyCity-adjacent and central playgrounds keep little ones happy at no cost. The weekend farmers' markets are free to browse with cheap snacks.
