Beaches & Tahunanui
Tahunanui Beach is the family favourite — a long, flat, safe stretch of golden sand with shallow water, a free playground, a paddling pool, and even a small free hydroslide in summer at the modelling-pond reserve. There's masses of grass for picnics and run-around, making it an easy full day out for almost nothing. On a calm day the shallow lagoon area is perfect for toddlers.
- Tahunanui Beach — free, flat golden sand, safe shallow water
- Tahunanui playground & paddling pool — free, with summer water play
- Beach reserve picnic lawns — free, room to run
- Rabbit Island (Rabbit Island/Moturoa) — free beaches and forest tracks nearby
Walks & Lookouts
The Centre of New Zealand walk is a Nelson must-do and it's free — a short but steep climb (about 20–30 minutes up) from the Botanical Reserve to a lookout marking the surveyed centre of the country, with a great view over the city and bay. The reserve at the bottom has open space for kids, and there are gentler riverside and city walks if little legs aren't up for the hill.
- Centre of NZ walk — free, short climb, panoramic views
- Botanical Reserve — free green space at the base of the walk
- Maitai River walkway — free, flat riverside path with swimming holes
- Grampians and Tantragee tracks — free hill walks near town
Gardens, Markets & Parks
The Nelson Saturday Market in Montgomery Square is free to wander and a great morning out — buskers, food stalls and crafts. Isel Park is a free, gorgeous spot with huge old trees, open lawns and Broadgreen Historic House nearby, while the Miyazu Japanese Garden and Queens Gardens are both free, peaceful and pretty. The kids will happily lose an hour feeding ducks and crossing the little bridges.
- Nelson Saturday Market — free to browse, buskers and food
- Isel Park — free, big trees, lawns and a heritage house
- Miyazu Japanese Garden — free, ponds and bridges
- Queens Gardens — free Victorian gardens in the city centre
Cheap Treats & Rainy-Day Options
Natureland Zoo at Tahunanui is a small, charming zoo with a modest entry fee (under-2s free) — a lovely cheap outing with meerkats, monkeys and farm animals. The Nelson Provincial Museum has free general admission for residents and cheap entry otherwise, making it a good wet-weather stop. The Riverside and central pools are cheap warm swims when the weather turns.
