Free Things to Do with Kids in Whangārei — Family Guide 2026

Whangārei is one of our favourite stop-offs heading north — just two hours up State Highway 1 from Auckland, and the perfect break before pushing on to the Bay of Islands. What surprised us most is how much there is to do here for free: a 30-metre waterfall on the edge of town, towering kauri trees, a riverside marina playground, and uncrowded northern beaches. Here are the best free things to do with kids in Whangārei, all tried and tested with our own crew.

Free Waterfalls & Kauri Walks

Whangārei Falls is the star of the show, and it's completely free. This 26-metre waterfall is one of the most photographed in the North, with a free carpark and an easy 30-minute loop track that even toddlers can manage — there are viewing platforms top and bottom, so you get the full effect without a hard walk.

For something cooler and shadier, A H Reed Memorial Kauri Park is free and home to giant kauri trees you reach via an elevated boardwalk through the canopy. The kids love walking 'up in the trees', and the whole loop takes about 30 minutes.

Free Riverside & Town Basin Fun

The Town Basin Marina is the heart of family-friendly Whangārei. There's a large, modern waterfront playground that's completely free, plus boats to watch, sculptures to spot, and plenty of grass for a picnic. We've happily spent a whole afternoon here without spending a thing.

From the Town Basin you can pick up the Hātea River Loop Walkway — a flat, pram-friendly 3km path along the river that's ideal for scooters and little legs. The Whangārei Art Museum at the Town Basin is also free to enter if the weather turns.

Free Gardens & Quarry

The Whangārei Quarry Gardens are a hidden gem and entry is free (donations welcome). Built inside an old quarry, they're full of winding paths, a duck pond, waterfalls and quirky corners that kids love to explore — it feels like a secret garden adventure.

It's an easy, contained spot where younger children can roam a bit more freely, and there are plenty of benches and lawns for a picnic. Allow an hour or two to wander.

Free Beaches & Northern Bays

Some of the best free days out near Whangārei are at the coast. Ocean Beach and the wider Bream Bay are uncrowded, golden-sand beaches that are free to visit — perfect for a swim, sandcastles and rock-pooling, without the crowds you'd find further south.

A little further afield (about a 30-minute drive), the Manaia Track near Tutukaka delivers stunning beach and island views for the price of a short walk. Pack a picnic and you've got a full free day out.

Budget Summary

A full day exploring Whangārei with kids can genuinely cost you nothing beyond food and petrol. Most of the carparks (waterfalls, kauri park, beaches) are free, and the museums and gardens run on a donation basis. Pack your own lunch and you'll keep the whole day under $30 for a family of four.
