What to Expect

Wai-O-Tapu is a 30km drive south of Rotorua, taking around 30-40 minutes by car. The park is stroller-friendly, with a 1.5-2 hour walking circuit that's suitable for kids of all ages, from 0+. Our kids were fascinated by the vibrant colours and unique geological formations.

The Lady Knox Geyser erupts daily at 10:15am, and it's a must-see. Be sure to arrive early to secure a good spot, as it gets crowded quickly. The geyser is artificially triggered with soap, which is an interesting process to learn about.

Value for Money

Prices for Wai-O-Tapu are $40 per adult and $14 per child. We found it to be good value for money, considering the unique experience and educational value. However, it's worth noting that the park can get crowded during peak season, which may detract from the experience.

Insider Tips

To make the most of your visit, consider arriving early to beat the crowds. Wear comfortable shoes and bring sun protection, as the park can get hot during summer. You can also bring a picnic lunch to enjoy in the park's designated areas.

Booking and Saving Money

Book your tickets online in advance to save time and money. You can also consider purchasing a family pass, which can be more cost-effective for larger families. Keep an eye on the Wai-O-Tapu website for special promotions and discounts.

Downsides for Families

While Wai-O-Tapu is generally suitable for families, there are a few downsides to consider. The park can get crowded during peak season, which may be overwhelming for younger kids. Additionally, some of the walking paths can be steep and uneven, so be sure to keep a close eye on your little ones.
