Wai-O-Tapu Review

What to Expect

Wai-O-Tapu is a 30km drive south of Rotorua, taking around 30-40 minutes by car. The walking circuit takes around 1.5-2 hours to complete, and is suitable for kids of all ages (0+ years). The colourful geothermal pools are truly breathtaking, and the daily eruption of the Lady Knox Geyser at 10:15am is a highlight for kids.

The walking circuit is relatively easy, with some stairs and uneven paths, but it's manageable with a stroller or for little legs. Be sure to bring comfortable shoes, sunhats, and plenty of water to keep everyone hydrated.

Our kids were absolutely transfixed by the geothermal pools and the geyser eruption. It's a great way to educate them about geology and the natural world in a fun and interactive way.

Value for Money

The prices for Wai-O-Tapu are $40 per adult and $14 per child, which we think is reasonable considering the unique experience and stunning natural beauty of the attraction. However, it's worth noting that the cost can add up for larger families.

To save money, consider visiting during the off-peak season or looking for package deals that include other Rotorua attractions.

Insider Tips and Best Time to Visit

To make the most of your visit, we recommend arriving early to catch the 10:15am geyser eruption. It's also a good idea to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy in the park, as the cafe options are limited.

The best time to visit Wai-O-Tapu is during the spring and summer months when the weather is warm and sunny. However, it's worth noting that this is also the peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds.

Booking and Saving Money

To book your tickets to Wai-O-Tapu, simply visit their website and follow the online booking process. You can also purchase tickets at the gate on the day of your visit.

To save money, consider looking for package deals that include other Rotorua attractions, or visiting during the off-peak season. You can also use online discount codes or coupons to reduce the cost of your tickets.
