The gorge is free to visit and suitable for kids aged 5+, with a short walk to the viewing platform. For a more relaxing experience, head to Lake Ianthe, a quiet and calm lake with warm water perfect for swimming during mid-summer. The lake is often deserted on weekdays, making it an ideal spot for families looking for some peace and quiet. The drive from Hokitika town to Lake Ianthe takes around 30 minutes, and there are no entrance fees.

The best time to visit the Hokitika Gorge is early morning, when the sunlight highlights the vibrant turquoise color of the water. Lake Ianthe, on the other hand, is perfect for a mid-morning or afternoon visit, when the sun is not too harsh.

Glowworm Caves and Gold Rush History
